Nordic & Baltic urban map showcase
This is a project intended to showcase the urban footprint of the bigger urban areas in the Nordic and Baltic region. This tread is heavily inspired by the Urban Area Map Showcase on the Citytalk and Urban Issues forum. A few cities from our region has been posted there already (Spotila's maps are more accurate and better than mine IMO).
Note 1: All the maps in this tread is made to the same zoom level (50km eye altitude +/- a few hundred metres). Note 2: The maps does not give any indication to the density of an urban area, and its accuracy may vary with my ability to interpret the satelite images provied by Google Earth (Forest land vs. parks/ golf courses etc.). Corrections are welcome. Note 3: All population figures are collected from reliable official sources (e.g. not Wikipedia). Metro population numbers will not be provided. Note 4: This tread is allowed on the strict condition of no City vs. City talk. Also, if you would like to post your own maps, please provide a link rather than posting in the tread. Population number sources: Norway: SSB - Tettsteder, Folkemengde og areal, 2011 SSB - Folkemengde og areal i tettsteder, 2011 Sweden: SCB - Folkmängd i riket, 2010 SCB - Tätortar 2010 Denmark: DST - Byoppgørelsen 2011 Iceland: http://www.statice.is Finland: Statistikcentralen (2005 numbers) Latvia: Centralas Statistikas parvaldes datu bazes Lithuania: Lietuvos statistikos departamentas Cities so far: Arendal, Bergen, Drammen, Daugavpils, Esbjerg, Gävle, Göteborg, Halmstad, Haparanda/Tornio - Kemi, Kalmar, Karlstad, Kristiansand, København, Lahti, Mjøsregionen, Norrköping, Odense, Oslo, Pori, Reykavik, Riga, Stavanger - Sandnes, Tallinn, Torshavn, Trekanten region, Turku, Västerås, Vilnius, Ålborg

In the first post, I've linked to the source I used, but this is 2005 figures. If you could provide me with a better and more recent source I would appreciate it

Same in Helsinki. Helsingfors centraltätort population(1 000 000+) is urban area. There is a many cities in that number like Espoo, Vantaa etc. Many ppl say that Espoo and Vantaa are like suburbs of Helsinki but they have city status and their own goverments. |

I guess it was the term "centraltätort" which confused me into beliving those numbers were for the continuous built up area. It seemed a little high. But a specific link to Statistikcentralen or similar would be nice.
Btw, by the term "city population" I refer to the tettsted/tätort population. Regardsless of administrative borders. |

As of 31 January 2011, Turku’s population was 177,430, which makes it the fifth largest city in Finland by population. As of 31 August 2008 there were 303,492 inhabitants living in the Turku sub-region, which makes it the third largest urban area in Finland after the Greater Helsinki area and Tampere sub-region.
Source: Wikipedia... ![]() ps the urban population seems to be 246,312 Last edited by frank_hki; December 20th, 2011 at 08:10 PM. |
