BOG around 2020

> Essentially, the airport will be expanded further east on the unified terminal, from both sides of ElDorado Avenue: over some gas deposits towards the cargo area on the south side and over old hangars towards the "Puente Aéreo" on the north side.
Besides this, two new concourses will be built on an area today used for military purposes (adjacent to the new control tower).
The project also encompasses the improvement of the north runway which will be extended, at most, 900 meters to the west. This will help flight towards Europe and beyond to get to Bogotá's altitude without the restrictions that exist today. More taxiways will also be built to improve movements in both runways.

The military and general aviation will move to an improved airbase in the town of Madrid, about 40kms away from Bogotá.

I forgot to upload these pics along with the ones yesterday. They are stills from a YouTube video from the airport's channel.
The link is at the end of the post (HD available):

Too many wonderful photos indeed! Let me suggest something, though: why not add photos on a daily basis rather than compiling them after one week and posting them all at the same time, like in many other threads? I must say that the airport looks truly wonderful, it's just that the posting style doesn't appeal to me because it makes me want to browse through multiple images in one sitting after a week compiling all those photos... How about a photo-a-day instead? That way, tourists that take photos from the airport can be posted here on a regular basis and I can make quick comments on them as we move along rather than waiting in desperation from other members to post photos here.

And by the way, question: I wonder how many gates will the expanded Domestic and International terminals will have, as well as the upcoming Terminal 4? And with the brand new airside terminal, will it host to international flights only, or will it host domestic flights as well (or vice versa)? The expansion plan looks truly interesting that I want to monitor its development over time...

Let's try doing that then .

Answers to your questions:

The domestic side will be expanded towards the cargo terminals, over an area now occupied by gas tanks that are going to be moved somewhere else in the airport. The international terminal will be expanded towards the Puente Aéreo (Avianca's domestic terminal) over old hangars that will be demolished.

Exact numbers are not yet known for the new expansion plan. It is still too soon to tell, as construction of this new plan will begin only in 2015 at the earliest. Keep in mind that at the moment the airport is being expanded, creating an "h" shaped terminal that will be fully operational, including a brand new control tower, in mid to late 2014.

One could speculate, seeing the size of both areas, that at least 7 new gates might be built on the domestic side and around 8 on the international side. The unified terminal (national and international areas) being built now has 32 gates. So that expansion alone will bring the airport to 47 gates, more or less.

No one knows how many gates will T4 and T5 have, although all graphics on the new expansion seem to agree that each terminal might at least have 14 gates, plus remote areas next to them. It is certainly not clear if these new concourses will host international or national flights. It will depend on the growth of both markets, new routes and airlines arriving at BOG and practicality. For example, all Star Alliance airlines could be transferred to the new concourses and the rest remain on the unified terminal.

As new facts become available, they will be posted .

I see... that'll be an interesting development. And speaking of Star Alliance, it makes me wonder if Avianca is interested in expanding further in the United States since United Airlines is a major player in the alliance, and that Avianca could partner with UA to operate flights between Bogota and UA's hubs, especially to Houston, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. If not, United could operate its planes down to Bogota, on top of its existing routes (if available) to provide services to Colombia and establish a stronger route network, especially if Avianca wants to connect to the Asia-Pacific region where the aviation market is growing stronger than ever.

First off, what other cities in the USA could support resonable traffic to Bogota. Sasonal or Year Round traffic. Maybe Avancia could hook up one of Canada cities.

Second Avancia would have to make a stop somewhere in Hawaii or on the West Cost of the USA to go to the Asia-Pacific region. They have the A350-900 on order and odds are they would have to cut capcity on the route to make it work. Plus passengers could always hook up with United in SFO or LAX. That is why airlines have alliances.

Good points. But, Avianca to Canada would mean limited traffic to Asia because Toronto does not have as many nonstop flights to Asia as Vancouver does. On top of that, Los Angeles and San Francisco already have more than sufficient number of flights to Asia and Hawaii that Avianca could operate to both of them (with UA codeshare, or vice versa) so that it can hook up with over 20 Asian, Oceania, and Hawaiian destinations from both airports. Besides, AV has A330s already, sufficient to cover BOG-LAX and BOG-SFO.

BOG has flights to 8 cities in the US: Atlanta, Fort Lauderdale, Houston, Miami, Newark, New York, Orlando and Washington. American will begin flights to Dallas in October and Avianca to San Juan in July.

However, BOG really needs a connection to the west coast of the US, namely LAX which used to be operated by Avianca. Other interesting US Cities would be Chicago or Boston. Most passengers to other cities make use of the alliances, for example with United, to get to the rest of the country.

As for Canada, Air Canada doesn't even have a permanent daily flight to Bogota which is kind of weird but that's how it is. A flight to Vancouver would run very low on passengers. In order to get to Asia, most passengers use LAX or CDG and FRA in Europe.

Looks like the new terminal has a lot of progress indeed... I can now see the workings of a modern, efficient airport in the progress here. Will that new terminal be able to handle an A380 flight in the process?
