Kolkata, August 16: The West Bengal government is planning to set up 10 smart cities. While there’s no single definition of a “smart city”, the term loosely refers to cities using information and technology (IT) to solve urban problems. According to Debashis Sen, Principal Secretary, State Urban Development Department, 10 areas or townships have already been identified and a list of these will soon be sent to the Centre for probable inclusion in the smart cities list. The move by the State government comes after the Centre revealed a plan to build 100 “smart cities” or cities outfitted with high-tech communication capabilities across the country.Smart city project The areas or townships selected include New Town – Rajarhat (on the fringes of Kolkata), Durgapur, Bolpur, Kalyani, Baruipur, Gangasagar, Debanandapur, Raghunathpur, Phulbari and Jaigaon. “Some of these are existing townships on which we will start work soon, while some are going to be Greenfield ventures. The list is yet to be finalised by the Centre,” Sen said on the sidelines of a seminar organised by the National Association of Realtors. Work on documenting the smart city project has begun. Survey work is expected to start soon, the bureaucrat said. The basic infrastructure for the smart city will be developed by the State government with a probable funding from the Centre, while housing and other requirements will be carried out by private developers. According to Sen, the exact modalities of the smart city – that include both amenities and financing facilities – are yet to be worked out.Financial hub Meanwhile, the West Bengal government has appointed a domestic financial institution, Infrastructure Leasing and Financial Services Ltd, as transaction advisor for hard-selling its much-touted financial hub. Set up in Rajarhat in 2012, the hub has been touted as the next-in-line to Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla.

The West BengalGovernment will develop six smart cities in the state on the basis of importance of those areas in trade, industry and technical education. "The projects have been cleared by the state cabinet today," Higher Education Minister Partha Chatterjeesaid in Kolkata on Friday after the Cabinet meeting. The six smart cities included airport city developed by the Bengal Aerotropolis Pvt Limited (BAPL) at Andal in Burdwan district, tannery and IT hub at Bantala near here, Durgapurin Burdwan district, Bolpur in Birbhum district, Kalyani in Nadia district and Siliguri in Darjeeling district. State Cabinet also identified these six cities by six different names, Chatterjee said adding "While the city developed by BAPL at Andal will be known as 'Golden City' and the City at Bantala as 'Sector-VI', Durgapur will be known as 'Silver City', Bolpur as 'Nobel City', Kalyani as 'Knowledge City' and Siliguri as 'Sunrise City," state's Urban Development Minister Firhad Hakim said. In all these smart cities, 25% space will be earmarked for those under Economically Weaker Section (EWS), besides earmarking 40 per cent area as 'open space', Hakim said. "Now the government will ask for preparing Detailed Project Report for all these cities. After submission of DPR before the government, we will be able to follow next steps," the minister said. During the day, state cabinet also cleared deck for much awaited deep sea port at the Sagar Island in joint venture, Chatterjee said without elaborating the project. Chatterjee also said that altogether nine new medical colleges, five by the state government and four by private, in the state have been cleared by the state cabinet on Friday.

Well MB is hell bent in criticizing NaMo as a guy without brains .... NaMo on the other hand is enthusiastic of getting France to develop Kolkata as a smart city ... and Didi, for sure, is aware of it however has not even once mentioned about it. Now just like her arrogance and stubborness, she will not favour France because if she does, she would feel that it is NaMo's win. Nor she could transform Kolkata to London in the last 5 years. The result- Vishwakarmar chucho. LOL

On Modi visiting France, they want to built smart city in Chandigarh and Pondicherry......... The names are not final but France except making smart city in Tier-2 cities have given direct proposal to built Kolkata as a smart city which Modi has accepted but MB has not commented on it neither did she take active steps in it so we have to wait to see what she chooses Politics or people?????? Lets see hope people are chosen..................... Ritojitda one thing I have missed,London to gave a similar interest in renovating Kolkata but she didn't go to London but now when she is going they may propose Kolkata............... So the topic is MB to choose Paris or London??
