Perhaps it requires a sympathetic eye to see that authenticity that you search for. Paris is not just the physical city. It is a city of memory, and an evocation of some of the best things in European culture overall.

I would say:

1. Jerusalem (Love it due to historical and religious past, a true and great city).

2. Mecca (The Centrum for Islam, also a historical and religious place with beauty).

3. Rome (Lovely historical place, with a lot of antic such as Colosseum, short said "Rome Empire"!).

4. Krakow (Former capital of Poland, a city with buildings that still excist since WW2, Schindler's Factory, Wawel, Old Town, the Jewish district etc. Historical city aswell).

5. Athens (Beauty city, with many lovely sights to see such as Acropolis and the "birth place" of sports or Olympic Game).

6. Budapest (Buda Castle, Parlament Building, Aquincum Museum and of course, Szechenyi bath, it is an amazing city).

7. Amsterdam (Anne Frank House, Van Gogh Museum and all the canal-streets that Amsterdam has is amazing and I find Amsterdam as Venice of the north, beautiful city that deserves to be mention).

These are my 7 wonders cities!

Once stayed in a hotel for one night. Every other day I slept in the car in the ghetto of Paris. Even my hotel was in the ghetto! So I've pretty much seen all of Paris that I desire to see haha.

I just think France as a whole is pretty overrated, and I've taken French now in college and high school for 6 years! So it's a bold statement for me. I just think countries like Germany and Austria have much nicer cities with IMO better cultures. I don't think there are much better cities out there than dusseldorf and Vienna.
How old are you, 13?

Well you may have taken French in college and you may have studied it for years, but it seems like you need to focus more...

Nope, I'm 20 years old and in college, but thanks for asking. If you were able to comprehend english, you'd see I said "I've taken French for 6 years in COLLEGE and high school" in the very post you responded to. Please think before you write.

I'm writing on American IPhone, it auto corrects what I write. Believe me, I know it's Michel. I don't care to take the time to correct two extra letters.

we think a lot alike, but I would have included Torun Poland as well. It's not well known, but tourists are starting to discover it as one of the most intact medieval cities in Europe complete with walls - it's also where Copernicus lived.

Paris is huge and filled with history. I could spend a lifetime there exploring all the museums, just to see all the paintings in the Louvre takes about a month.

Also want to visit the church with the tomb of Napoleon.

One of your favourite cities is Copenhagen I've been there a zillion times since the 70's and thats really a city I'm fed up with, but for first time visitors it's probably a sensation.

Also Munich for me is nothing special, remember drinking beer with my parents at the Hofbräuhaus in 1986, that was fun though.

I used to spend 14 hours in the louvre everytime I visited, and I probably visited 9 times. My dad would make us walk around and state at every pixies for at least 2 minutes haha. And I've been to the church where napoleon was buried 3 times! Magnificent tomb.

I'll say this, I spent the new years for the new millennium in 2000 on Paris, and it was amazing! Paris is beautiful, but i think it's hype is disproportionate to reality.

What do you mean exactly by hype?

I mean, people give it more credit than it deserves basically. I feel the same way about LA.

And what is/are given more credit than it/they deserve? Can you give specific examples?

I'm just saying to me the city doesn't deserve all that it gets in terms of people talking about it so much. Just as LA doesn't deserve it. I think there are tens of cities in the US with much more going for them than LA, and I think the same about Paris in terms of Europe.

To say that a city does not deserve its reputation is to say that it has fallen short od some expectations aroused. Whether a verdict is subjective or objective, it still is based upon disappointed expectations, and I am simply asking you to give us examples of the expectations that you had in the case of Paris.

Seeing your extremely young age, it is natural/expected that you lack the refinement and sophistication to appreciate what a city such as Paris has to offer.

Such is the nature of things. But it is a pity, nonetheless.

P.S. And I would not discount LA so easily, if I were you. Its allure is not for everyone (and I admit that a lot of it is not for me), but of a certain allure and urbanity is does have, and in abundance.

Dear tpe,

it all started because I wrote a list of 7 European cities stressing that IMHO classical beauty can only be found in Europe.
Now you may agree or disagree, but it is a personal opinion and as such it should be taken.
However, the guy you just replied to started to run Paris down with no argument.
To be honest I think that's it.

Well then. Perhaps I shouldn't pursue the subject.

And as to classical beauty, I know what you mean. For me, US cities have a different kind of beauty. In a way, I do like dipping my feet in both worlds.

Well then, I have to put another wonder city --> Torun, as you describe it, it sounds lovely.

To every person I talk to in person, I say the same things about Paris. I just don't think it's that great of a city, and you just happen to live in one of my least favorite cities. I think London is overrated as well, if that eases your troubles at all.

I agree with Royal Rose. Paris is nice, but I wasn't left wanting more, and it didn't really live up to my expectations (which weren't that high to begin with). London, New York, it was love at first sight and remains that way to this day. That said, Paris is still a beautiful city, just not the kind of beautiful I like.
