No walaal, no such info can be found on the net, but Turkish Airlines intends to start flights next month, and a team of engineers is already busy renovating the airport:

Quote:
Turkish Airlines to start Mogadishu flights in 2012

DUBAI — The Turkish Airlines this week said it will add flights to and from the Somali capital at the beginning of January in 2012 as it tries to draw more African passengers.

Turkish Airlines (THY) CEO Temel Kotil told Anatolia news agency that THY will fly to Mogadishu twice-daily. The announcement follows as the government of Turkey deployed engineers to renovate and modernize the airport in Mogadishu. - Source

Finally, the rendering that was not shown in this picture book has been revealed.

I have high optimism for this project and I look forward to updates!

It is a wait and see at the moment. Strong Turkey-Somali economic link will benefit Both sides.

Any updates on this project? I'm hearing from an unreliable sources that their will be a brand new international airport somewhere in between the town of Balcad and Mogadishu. Apparently the Turks decided to abandon the current airport because of lack of space.

I've heard that as well, but we need someone on the ground to confirm it. or get access to that book with construction renders, the Deputy Prime Minister of Turkey once showed briefly.

A brand new airport would be great though, we could turn the entire Airport area into an aviation city, with multiple airports, long runways, various headquarters of airline companies including Somali Airlines, as well as training facilities, military facilities, civilian aviation hubs, etc.

If they were to build one there, the roads need to be improved as well. The upside of the current location is that it's in the city.

The current location of the airport is not favourable to any extension of the runway, buildings or other facilities as it is right on the sea shore on the one side, and next to heavily built up areas of Mogadishu city on the other. It is either a case of many many properties being demolished and some districts of the city being cleared, or just building a new airport just outside the city.

This is an aerial picture of the current airport location.

That's actually a downside. If it's a short-term upgrade you're talking about, the current location is fine. But if it's a long-term upgrade, and you're expecting major traffic and commerce, then they have to find a new location to build it.

I frankly find the current airport more than adequate for the near future. Even with that map above, with major readjustments, a second runway can be built.

Why an extension of the runway in Mogadishu? At 4500m it's already the largest in East Africa, in-fact the two largest runways in the region are based in Somalia (the other being the Berbera Airport). South Africa, the biggest aviation hub on the continent doesn't have a runway exceeding 4900m at the moment, and they have alot of traffic. I rather see some room being made for the Turks and the new goverment to construct a completely new modern airport at the 'Nr 1' spot of your map, and transform the whole area into an aviation city with smaller runways at certain places.

I mean the current airport right now is unique because of its length built since it was used as a space shuttle emergency landing spot, but the space shuttle has been retired and airport has no more uses to NASA who i believe were also contributing money on the runway's maintenance. Mogadishu deserves a new airport just outside the city gates where there is land to accommodate such a task as building a new airport, which will include several 5 to 3 star hotels, convention centers, Shopping centers etc.. While the airport inside the city should be converted to a full cargo center hauling all kinds of freight to and from somalia and may hosts the cities future airforce base

That might actually be a good idea considering that this airport is so close to the port and the need for transporting cargo and freight will grow exponentially as recovery begins.

As far as Im aware Mogadishu airport was never used as an emergency lading site... that would have been Berbera in the north of the country which has the longst runway in Africa.

Oh i perceived since of its length it was used as a emergency landing spot for the Shuttle?? Probably it was built for the Soviets who also had a space shuttle??

Not as far as im aware... it was only ever Berbera that could be used as an emergency landing runway for NASA. As ive noted before, Mogadishu airport was/is too close to heavily built up areas to be suitable for emergency landing of shuttles... whereas Berbera, is not so much.
