I'm hoping for the first option.

the cauldron will be on the grass in the centre of the stadium then transfered during the opening ceremony to a space above the stadium

It will be something like Option #1. It has to be. After building a full bowl like Birds Nest, that pretty much excluded doing something connected to the actual structure of the stadium, say a la Sydney. So the only alternative left for a rather combustible, somewhat dangerous piece would be a strucutre by itself unattached to the main stadium.
Design? Well, Heatherwisk may design something to make it unique--maybe in 3 stages to denote London's hosting the Games 3x? Or something like that. How will it be lit? Again, they're left with no choice but a guy-wire from the main stadium floor a la Albertville, Atlanta and faking it like Torino. Except maybe they're use 3 lighters. Even though it's official that some guy has been brought in to design a special cauldron, I'm still expecting 2, which would be a shame.
I'll go 4. Something else, a flame held in a cauldron levitating over the track and field in the middle of the spider's web in a similar fasion to the bigscreen at this football stadium:

The IOC and the Fire Marshalls won't approve that. Impractical. It offers NO SURPRISE whatsoever to the OC audience. This scheme was considered for Beijing and even Birds Nest with a more solid roof than London's Stadium, that idea was nixed. As for the Orbital, read the other thread. The Orbit did NOT apply nor was it granted a permit to have some sort of fiery thing on top. LOCOG will have nothing to do with that Orbit. Above all, read the IOC Charter. The Org Committee is guided by that. |

There is already going to be a suspended ring over the middle of the stadium. It is solid enough.

So what? The IOC Charter states that "...the flame/cauldron must be visible to a great part of the host city..." which is why it is, for the most part, located in a HIGH PERCH above the stadium. If it floated in the middle of the stadium...which it will NOT...it will ONLY be visible from the top of the Orbit.

I was simply stating the the roof is strong enough to suspend the flame over the centre.

Tend to agree with KnightTemplar on this.
In terms of practicalities I'm not sure it would work and even it would I'm not sure it'd be desirable. There will be a metal ring in the centre of the stadium but its purpose is for lighting and sounds rigs and the like. I don't know if it would be strong enough for a cauldron. Besides which, having a gas pipe going across a fabric roof and dangling across the stadium doesn't sound massively safe. And also, nobody would have a great view of it from up there. You'd see the bottom of it and that's about it from inside the stadium, and from the outside it'd be invisible. The Orbit will be open to posh receptions during the Games so on safety grounds can't see that happening! I should think whoever is being wined and dined up there will want to see the cauldron and not be a part of it. So I'm ruling out the Orbit. So, it'll be #1 or #4 I reckon. Either they've taken up the planning permission they had on the tower to the north of the stadium, or London is thinking completely outside the box and do something not seen before. If I was a betting man I'd go for #1. |

I kind of like the idea the whole stadium roof will be lit, a bit like a giant gas ring,

Same idea was considered for Vancouver because they used an indoor stadium. Of course, rejected because not only is the whole situation dangerously combustible...but it sends off the totally wrong environmental message. Even Qatar might not be so stupid as to try something like that. Next. Last edited by Knitemplar; December 27th, 2011 at 06:08 PM. |

Why can it not be on a structure inside the stadium? Or even on a Wembly-stylee arch? I don't think being outside the stadium would work.
