Great pictures as always, that hanging in the air faucet fountain is marvelous! Dandi Pul is part of our heritage; hopefully there are plans to revive Dandi Pul as pedestrian bridge on the river front.

Dandi pul was recently damaged in a fire, hence the 'road closed' sign...hopefully the authorities will take care of it now.

And that circle in Law Garden is fondly known as Chakli Circle

4-lane bridge to ease traffic at IIM crossroads

Revenue Minister Anandiben Patel will lay the foundation of the bridge today; The proposed cost of the structure is Rs 33 crore

LINK

The IIM crossroads, which has become commuters’ nightmare during the peak traffic hours due to chaotic traffic, will soon become a chaos-free zone. Ahmedabad Minicipal Corporation (AMC) is gearing up to build a bridge starting from the old IIM campus to Sardar Centre Crossroads. The foundation of the bridge will be laid in the evening today by State Revenue Minister Anandiben Patel.

The 517.86-metre-long and 13.5-metre-wide bridge will have four lanes and cost around Rs 33 crore. Interestingly, according to AMC sources, this will be the first bridge in the city where the space under the structure will be utilised to set up book stalls, eateries, galleries and several other things.

“It’s true that the space under the bridge will be utilized in different ways. The entire space will be covered with glasses. The space will be used for book shops, eateries, galleries and many other purpose like an assembly point for students, etc,” said Municipal Commissioner Guruprasad Mohapatra.

“We intend to prepare the bridge within 15 months as this is one of the busiest traffic junction. We want to ensure that the public is not inconvenienced while the work is on. We will try and finish the work as soon as possible. We request people to co-operate with us,” he added.

The proposal for a bridge over IIMA crossroads was made by Dr Mohapatra when he announced his budget for the year 2012-13 in January. The construction work of the bridge has been given to Dineshchandra R Agrawal infracon Pvt. Ltd while the structure has been designed by H C P Design and Project Management Pvt. Ltd.

Traffic signals to go wireless

The wireless traffic light control system does away with breakage of cables leading to faulty signals. Besides, it will incorporate countdown timers so that people can save on fuel

LINK

Proposed:

Existing:

With the Rs 4.5 crore Automatic Traffic Control System (ATCS) system having failed due to technical problems, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation is now planning to introduce a new wireless system to control traffic lights at the same cost.

The reason for withdrawing the ATCS system was that the sensors failed and therefore only 40 of the 84 signals at junctions across the city were in working condition.

The reason for the failure of the ATCS system ranged from non-availability of power, wiring problems, CPU card problems, damaged cables due to digging work and non-functional lamps.

But that is history now. The wireless system will have ZigBee-enabled traffic lights which can adjust light durations based on the overall mix of traffic at any given intersection. It will also incorporate countdown timers so people can save on fuel consumption by switching off the ignition key when required.

ENERGY-SAVING OPTION

ZigBee is a specification for a suite of high level communication protocols using small, low-power digital radios for personal area networks. Using this system, algorithms for traffic management can be programmed by planners and adjusted or overridden remotely at anytime. Traffic lights can also be dimmed or made brighter based on ambient lighting conditions, enabling the lights to be dimmer on a sunny day and brighter at night, increasing safety while saving energy.

Using the new technology, the traffic department can schedule hour-wise and day-wise sequences in a week and even come up with a different schedule for traffic on holidays. The system eliminates physical cabling and functions even during power failure since it is solar based. It incorporates central monitoring of traffic using GSM/GPRS connectivity and therefore junction to junction signal synchronisation becomes simple.

A ZigBee-enabled traffic light can automatically detect bulb failure, which besides the savings of reduced periodic inspections, delivers a tremendous safety benefit by substantially minimising the amount of time a traffic light is out of order. An automatic notification e-mail or SMS text message can be sent immediately to the city’s traffic department.

I K Patel, deputy municipal commissioner and incharge of traffic department, said, “Yes, we are thinking of switching over to the wireless system in near future. We may use the existing poles and incorporate the new wireless system. That will bring down the cost of the project to Rs 4.5 crore for 150 signals in the city. This wireless system will do away with non-operational signals due to breakage of cables. The system is already being used in Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam.”

Jitendra Bhojak, marketing manager of Efftronics said, “The system can run even on solar power. Once the timer of a signal is set, the traffic cop just has to overlook smooth flow of vehicles. The timer can be fixed according to the flow of the traffic. Also, there would be a remote control with the cop who in case of emergencies like VIP movement can alter the signals and the timer.”

Now the bridges will add to the riverfront's beauty rather than damaging it...
