AMC is planning a very challenging project for Thaltej Circle. I dont have any concrete source but I've got the info indirectly from AMC Roads and Bridges Dept.

They're planning/proposing an underpass at Thaltej Circle, starting from the SAL Crossroads on Drive-In Road, going below Thaltej Circle and crossing the entire Thaltej village (which is very crowded, jam-packed and very narrow with 2 lanes only) and ending just after crossing the village near Thaltej Lake.

The following things could hamper the construction:-

-It's length, which is approx 1.30 kms (almost 3 times more than other underpasses)
-From SAL crossroads to Thaltej Circle, it will pass through a small hillock which will complicate matters
-The sheer volume of traffic passing through the circle which will be disrupted and diverted
-Very narrow road from the circle to the lake (for which some demolition will be required, I think)
-The bustling S.G. Road will be affected.

But overall, a very necessary and timely move by the AMC (if they decide to make it at all, coz all this is just what I've heard).

Thanks for the update Rushabh. That intersection is long overdue however building a tunnel that long at that location will be a very expensive undertaking. Let’s see how things work out. This project should also bring much needed improvement to Thaltej Lake.

This tunnel is very necessary if they want to increase the residential density of areas beyond thaltej. Same case happened with vastrapur where the main road contracts while passing through the village and expands again.

This is the right time to do this tunnel. They can detour the normal traffic via Bodakdev and gurudwara while constructuon is still on. And towards the thaltej side, they can use the new road parallel to the thaltej main road on the north side.

They can also bild the Thaltej flyover before building the tunnel so that the highway traffic is not hampered... and while doing this, they can provide the possibility of digging a tunnel underneath

I dont think length is the issue.... there have been longer tunnels built in history. Myabe it will be the first time in india.
Hillock will be an added advantage... this will discourage using the traditional cut and cover technique and allow them to dig without affecting the surface. Also, Thaltej tekro is not hard rock... it's just a mound of soil.

The narrow road can be a problem... but if they can manage the slopes so that they can put one carriageway over the other, the road above will be left unaffected. Let's see.. it's a long shot.

Yes, if they decide to have a tunnel then the project will be simplified (while the cost will multiply). Even 1 tunnel boring machine (TBM) costs many crores (if they decide to use it).

Its funny to think that even after providing this underpass/tunnel a flyover is still very much required along S.G. Road on Thaltej circle...

Double Decker tunnel - only that would guarantee three to four lanes each direction. This is grand but must be built – how much each of those bungalows and apartments cost now?
