Land acquisition starts for 6-lane Dholera road
Source ![]() Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad district officials have begun the process of acquiring land for a six-lane road that will connect Ahmedabad to Dholera’s special investment region (SIR). Sources said that the land acquisition for the metro project connecting city and Dholera SIR has also begun simultaneously. Officials said that in all 9.16 lakh sq metre land will be acquired for the two projects. The state government had in mid-September — just before the elections were announced — put on the fast track the work for introducing six town planning (TP) schemes across the 902 sq km area of the Dholera SIR. The government has also announced that Gandhinagar-Ahmedabad-Dholera stretch will be covered in two legs, from Gandhinagar to Ahmedabad and from Ahmedabad to Dholera by metro. Elevated metro has been proposed for the 100 km stretch. This will provide faster movement and will be important for the new international airport which is coming up in the region. The metro has also been approved under DMIC master plan by the central government. Officials said that the land is being acquired expeditiously as the work is expected to commence by January. |

Get set for more traffic snarls on SG Road
Source ![]() Ahmedabad: While several developmental projects in the city have created traffic bottlenecks, another major construction work will commence from next week that will result into traffic diversion on SG Road, especially for vehicles coming from and going towards Gandhinagar. According to a notification by the city police commissioner, the expansion of National Highway 8 C near Thaltej and Gurudwara Junction will require the vehicles to take suggested diversions. Due to construction of the new lanes, the diversions will be in effect from November 2012 to October 2013 . "As per the new traffic plan, the vehicles on Pakwan crossroads to Sola bridge and Drive-In Road to Thaltej village will be diverted. The vehicles towards Iskcon can take Sindhu Bhavan road towards Govardhan Party Plot and Hebatpur crossroads; the traffic from Vaishnodevi can take the Sola flyover and the service road from near New York Tower. The vehicles can take the Sarkhej route from Muktidham and Grand Bhagwati hotel. Service roads on both sides will be made one-way," said a senior traffic branch official. In addition to these diversions, vehicles from Gandhinagar can also take SAL Hospital-NFD Circle to Judges Bungalow Road to go towards Pakwan crossroads. Dinesh Parmar, deputy commissioner of police (traffic) told TOI that additional staff will be deployed on the diversions so as to prevent any bottlenecks. Traffic police also suggest that the vehicles coming from Sarkhej can take the Sardar Patel ring road to go towards Gandhinagar to avert the SG Road. |

Adding two lanes requires one year???? Constructing whole new 2km road also can't take 1 year.

I think they also plan to construct some new bridges and underpasses during this time.
1) Thaltej Circle flyover along SG Road 2) Thaltej Circle under-pass along Drive-In Road 3) Under-pass at Gurudwara along SG Road 4) and perhaps the flyover at Pakwan Crossroads along SG Road P.S. Just now I read in Gujarat Samachar that the road is being closed to level the small elevated portion around Thaltej Circle. I still think that hardly requires 1 month... if they are not planning to build some of these bridges during this one year then I (and many others) will be very disappointed. I mean, how better can it get, they wont have to bother about traffic if they construct these bridges during that time...this is the best opportunity they will get. But proposed Pakwan flyover is along Judges Bungalow Rd. & why we need DD flyover @ Thaltej & underpass @ Gurudwara. One flyover @ Thaltej will serve the purpose.
For constructing bridges or expanding roads never needs for closing roads. They might be changing the underground pipelines, but that too not take 1yr.

It was first proposed along JB road, but due to protests from local shopowners and planners they later changed the alignment along SG road.
All these flyovers and underpasses are proposed anyway. So I guessed that since building this many will create massive traffic jams, it is better to just create diversions...I cannot see any other reason to close down the road for 1 year. Anything other than building bridges cannot take this long... |

Yup ... anything other than building bridges cannot take this long. But still ... I persnolly don't like too much flyovers concentrated at one place.
1s ... During our college event, one town planner from AUDA has said single flyover from Iskon to Thaltej was planned in 2002 but due to high price they have scrapped the plan. So, now they can go for continuous flyover from Rajpath Club to Thaltej directly. It will also save cost.

They have already proposed to convert SG highway to SG freeway, wherein they have planned flyovers/underpasses at Sarkhej circle, ISCKON circle (existing), Pakvan Crossroads, Gurudwara Crossroads, Thaltej circle, Sola (existing), Gota (almost built), near Shantigram (existing) and Adalaj Crossroads (existing)...so all this barricading and such may be for this master plan.
4 flyovers remain to be built and 3 of the 4 lie in the 2.35 kms stretch that they are going to close... |

Much needed @ Sarkhej ... but govt. shows least interest there. Some days during peak hours even traffic police are not there resulting into jam of 2-3 km.Instead of 3 bridges they should opt for single 2.35 km. In future may be 2020, when metro will pass through S.G Road for Dholera what will be alignment?? Center ... not possible. Right/Left will spoil the skyline ... then?? |

Although an elevated corridor is better than a series of flyovers at most places, it is normally built when they just want to connect two very important points and ignore the places in between. Here in our case, if built the corridor will connect two rather un-important places (Rajpath Club area to Sola overbridge) and leave out some of the most important retail, corporate and business places underneath it. Providing ramps is not enough, it increases the cost and requires much space to build which we do not have.
So, all in all, though rather cumbersome and ugly, a series of bridges and underpasses is, I think, feasible for this particular stretch of SG Road...I can think of some other places which truly needs an elevated corridor like from before Helmet Crossroads to after Swastik Crossroads (3-4 kms long) etc... |

Transformation of S G Highway into 12-lane road begins on November 1
Residents and shop owners in the vicinity unhappy about road blockages and diversions that makes their movement difficult The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has started work on the proposed 12-lane road on S G Highway. The highway authority had proposed to convert S G Highway into a 12-lane road -- six roads and six underpasses-- to ease the traffic jams on this route. Moreover, roads connecting Thaltej Gam to Drive-in and Vastrapur to Gurudwara will be linked with a RCC slab, over the under pass. “The cost of this project is estimated to be around Rs 55.81 crore and is scheduled to end by October 24, 2014. Ashish Infracon Pvt Ltd will be handling the entire work. This is part of the national project and is being done to ease the traffic congestion on the Sarkhej- Gandhinagar Highway,” said J A Rehvar, Deputy Executive Engineer, NHAI. Mukesh Patel, director of Ashish Infracon Pvt Ltd who has under taken the work said, “The work on the underpass will begin from November 1. The underpass will have six lanes and there will be 3 lane slip road on either side of the under pass. The under pass will start from the New York Tower and will end at Pakwan”. Police commissioner S K Saikia has already issued a notification for traffic diversion from November 1. The stretch from Pakwan crossroad to Sola bridge, road from Drive-in cinema to Thaltej village and road from Vastrapur to Gurudwara will be shut down for work. Talking to Mirror on the traffic diversion, deputy police commissioner (traffic) D H Parmar said, “We will put up sign boards on approach roads to alert people of the diversion and alternate routes. Traffic cops will also be posted at diversions to guide the commuters and avoid traffic jams.” However, the closure of the roads and diversions haven’t gone down well with the public. “I live opposite ISCON mall and have to travel on the highway regularly. Also, PVR is my favourite movie multiplex. Now I will have to take long detours,” rues Shivani Sheth. Shopowners are also displeased due to the closure of roads. “There are several furniture marts on this road. The closure will affect them adversely. Authorities should take this into note and find an alternative. A whole year is a long time,” said Harshal Thaker, CEO Accessorise based of Bombay. (With inputs from Anjali Rathod & Mansi Shah) ![]()

It comes out to a 2.6 to 3 kms long underpass.
I dont really see the point of this unless they provide on and offramps at every junction |
