7 model road projects cleared

Ahmedabad: Seven new model road projects have been cleared by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) in the last few weeks. These projects were in the pipeline for long and were held back for the Election Commission’s approval. The projects will cost Rs 143.87 crore.

A major chunk of the money will be pumped into road construction in the west zone, which has seen an allocation of Rs 56.55 crore. Another chunk, Rs 16.04 crore will go into refurbishing roads that border the central and new west zones of the city. There are also plans for an overhaul of junction design and traffic lights for on Ashram Road for which the AMC has earmarked Rs 1.59 crore. The proposal will also see repair of Ashram Road, which interestingly will be resurfaced after almost a decade, while other roads of the city still give away every year.

The AMC has earmarked Rs 6.98 crore for Ashram Road repairs. On the other hand, the south zone of the city, which includes a major chunk of the chief minister’s constituency, gets Rs 22.77 crore in road repairs. The central and east zone gets Rs 21.97 crore worth of road projects.

Ahmedabad: In a city where every year cores of taxpayers’ money is spent on resurfacing roads, there is finally the thought of introducing roller-compacted concrete (RCC) roads from March next year. The project will also percolate to all the new roads that will be made for the third phase of the BRTS corridor. The engineering wing of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has already drawn a list of 15 road stretches which it plans to turn into RCC roads in the coming financial year.

In the western areas, the AMC has chosen a road stretches between Vastrapur and SG Road, Vadaj and Akhbarnagar, and the major road connecting SG Road to the ring road. Another road which the AMC wants to turn into an RCC surface is the Pirana landfill road. “These roads are high on traffic and have heavy vehicles passing on them and sustain maximum damage,” says a senior AMC official.

There are similar roads in the peripheral industrial belt of the city which face a similar fate, says the official. He refused to name the roads owing to the model code of conduct being in force in the state. The sudden decision to turn to RCC was spurred by the rising cost of bitumen — a petroleum product. As part of an experiment, the AMC has chosen 20 kilometers in the city for RCC conversion.

“We found that the cost-effectiveness of RCC roads was better than the bitumen roads,” the official said. “Today, the capital cost of laying bituminous road is 25 per cent to 32 per cent less than that for laying RCC roads. But a bituminous road requires repair every one-and-a-half years and the cost skyrockets. Concrete roads can last up to 20 years. The example of Surat is worth considering.

The AMC is also analyzing costs of applying a layer of polymer over the RCC roads to reduce wear and tear. Another anti-skid layer along with a special layer to reduce heat is also being finalized by the AMC. “Generally concrete roads over time get smoother and shiny and may even cause glares,” the official said. “A special layer will prevent this. Another problem is wearing off of tyres owing to the heat. A chemical layer to reduce temperatures would be applied to the RCC roads.

The minimum road width should be 60 feet. Utility pipelines will be covered with special blocks so that digging of roads is not required for repairs,” the official added.

What I observed when I went to mumbai (just 4 day trip) that the RCC portion of all the roads is quite good but the problem is at the junctions where they have used paver blocks (may be made up of some other material) which on time gives up and result in undulations.

Ahmedabad needs 10 flyovers on priority to ease our traffic woes

Traffic chaos is the most obvious side effect of urban sprawling in any city of the world, and Ahmedabad is no different. Passing though the city roads, Amdavadis face nightmare especially during office hours and in the evening when people are going home.

To solve the traffic woes, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) roped in Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) to carry out a survey of traffic situation in the city and suggest measures to ease out congestion.

CRRI has, in its study suggested that AMC needs to priorities building 10 flyovers at various traffic junctions in the city immediately. The institute carried out the survey in different areas of city and has recommended construction of 34 flyovers and under passes in a phased manner.

Despite the best efforts of civic body to promote public transport in the city, more than five lakh new vehicles have been added in Ahmedabad in last three years turning traffic scenario from bad to worst.

CRRI surveyed a total of 34 junctions in different zones of the city and have concluded that the civic body needs to build flyovers at all 34 traffic junctions in phase-wise manner. However, institute has given first priority to 10 traffic junctions in the city for building flyovers.

These places include, Helmet junction, Shyamal Cross Roads, Income Tax Cross Roads, Anjali Cross Roads, Paldi Junction, Jalaram Crossing, Vejalpur Crossing to name a few.

Of the total 34 traffic junctions included in survey, civic body has already started work on building a flyover at IIMA circle and has the flyover at Naroda Crossing is also in planning stage. Moreover, National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has started working on an underpass at Thaltej Cross Roads on SG Road.

Interestingly, the institute has found out need for building flyover at Pushpakunj Junction and Bhairavnath Junction in Maninagar but there is not enough space for building a flyover.

Moreover, the institute has also suggested building flyovers at two or more places on one road. For example, it has suggested building flyover at Vijay Cross Road, Helmet Cross Road, SAL Cross Road and Thaltej Cross Roads.

Proposed works of roads,bridges,fly overs in next one year in Ahmedabad

Guruprasad, Mohapatra, Commissioner of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) today presented the AMC’s budget draft of year 2013-14 to Standing Committee. In his draft proposal, the Commissioner has proposed several roads, bridges, fly over works. Following are the details:

-Ahmedabad city has 2150 km town planing roads in its 466 sq km area.

-Central Road Research Institute(CRRI) will survey the condition of 34 main junctions of city and suggest the need of bridges priority wise. The survey to take next ten years planning into consideration. In the first phase Rs 65 crore to be allotted for the financial year 2013-14 to plan bridge at Helmet junction, Anjali cross roads, Dinesh chambers, Hatkeshwar, Income tax, Shyamal cross roads.

-In east area Rs 2 crore budget is proposed initially for planning of food court, parking area, play area, vendor platform, toilet block etc under Jivraj Mehta over bridge, Shahibag railway over bridge, Sonini chali and Thakkarbapa nagar flyovers.

-Resurface works of 42 km main roads in various zones

-Rs 724 crore proposed for road works, while Rs 116 crore for the bridges

-A 800 meter long and 23 meter wide six-lane railway over bridge over Ahmedabad-Himmat nagar railway line crossing no.9 is proposed.

-Six river bridges will be renovated and colored at a cost of Rs 2 crore.

-Development of 19 roads of total 37.40 km length as model roads.

-20 km roads that are wider than 24 meter are to be converted to two lane RCC roads at a cost of Rs 50 crore.

-Under the Swarnim Jayanti Mukhyamantri Shaheri Vikas Yojna, a new railway over bridge connecting old Ranip and new Ranip is planned.
