The transport network of Lyon impresses me a lot. I actually want to visit the city later this year after my Japan trip to see what it is like. To me it looks cleaner than the older Paris network as well.

You'll be welcome in Lyon.

To be cleaner than Paris network is not difficult.
But compared with japonese networks, Lyon is far beyond.

FRANCE: Incumbent operator Keolis announced on October 7 that it had been selected by transport authority Sytral to operate public transport in Lyon for a further six years.

The contract, due to be signed in the coming weeks, followed almost two years of negotiations and will come into effect on January 1 2017. With subsidies of €1·4bn and revenue of €2·2bn over the contract term, Keolis says that this is its largest contract in terms of both revenue and passenger journeys. Ridership on the TCL network currently stands at almost 1·7 million passenger-journeys a day

The new trains will operate on Line D of the Lyon metro

FRANCE: Lyon transport authority Sytral has awarded Alstom a €140m contract to supply 30 trainsets for the Lyon metro. The order announced on October 26 includes options for up to 18 more trains.

The rolling stock has been ordered as part of Sytral’s Future Metro 2020 programme, which aims to increase the capacity of metro lines A, B and D. The first four trainsets are expected to enter service in 2019 on Line B. Each rubber-tyred trainset would be 36 m long with capacity for 325 passengers at 4/m2

As line B will be fully automatized by 2023, the current rolling stock serving it will be transfered to line A, allowing increased frequencies on both. The only frank reluctance I have about the whole process is it will reduce trains length from 3 cars to only 2 (36m, able to cope with 325 passengers, with less seats and wider doors). I fear it to cause some discomfort on the plateforms. That's the ongoing situation on line D, and things are running well because of very tight intervals between trains (one leaves the station, the next one arrives hardly a minute after)... Ridership on line B (133.000 pax/day back in 2006) is expected to increase by 40% by 2023 and 60% by 2030 so time will tell us if shorter trains do the job properly. There remains the possibility of coupled trains during rush hours though, plus line D will at last have 4 cars trains, which is a major improvement.

Otherwise, more details unveiled about T6 project. The first part of a semi-circular tram line which will connect Debourg and Hôpitaux Est by 2019, with transfer stations at Debourg (line B, T1), Beauvisage (T4), Mermoz-Pinel (line D) and Vinatier (T2-T5). It will include 14 stops, add 6.7km to the existing tram network, and have a travel time of about 21 minutes.

The second part, which will link Hôpitaux Est and La Doua Campus through Villeurbanne, is in the study phase for now.
It's gonna be a tougher one considering how denser the area is compared to the 8th arrondissement.
