One or two years ago I read about a project to build a RER like network for Lyon. Any news about it?

REAL is more an increase of service of some TER lines than a real RER/Sbahn system.

Would the tram-train be a better example of suburban rail?

It seems that at the end of the year, you will be able to take the TER, the metro in Lyon or tram in Saint-Etienne with the same ticket, thanks to the new syndicat mixte that is going to be created in april.

Today, Lyon inaugurates its 5th tramway line. This new one goes from Grange-Blanche (a big hospital center) to Eurexpo.

An article about the Tram train when it opened.
Quote:
Lyon tram-train service launched
25 September 2012

FRANCE: SNCF began operating tram-train services from Lyon Saint-Paul to Sain-Bel on September 24, following an official opening ceremony two days before.

On weekdays there is now a service every 30 min, increasing to every 15 min between Lyon and L'Arbresle during the peaks. It is hoped that ridership will double from present levels to 13 200 passengers a day by the end of 2012.

It is the first of three routes from Lyon Saint-Paul serving the city's western suburbs that are to be converted to tram-train operation. Subject to obtaining the necessary safety approvals, Alstom Citadis Dualis vehicles are expected to begin operating to Brignais in December, using a new east to south chord at Tassin, followed by the route to Lozanne.

The tram train is not a new network by a little renovation of an existing regional line with a low use serving the western suburbs of Lyon.
They just introduced tram train rolling stock instead of an heavier train to replace old train.

The tram train depart from Gare Saint Paul terminal in the west of Central Lyon.

Here a view of gare Saint Paul with Tram train and other regional Rolling stock.
