Schools to become more differently abled- friendly
Children with Special Needs (CWSN) studying in regular schools in Coimbatore Education District would have better facilities from this academic year.
Child-friendly toilets for differently abled, ramps and hand-rails in school buildings and strengthening resource centres for CWSN were given importance in Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA)’s activities under Inclusive Education for Differently Abled (IED) this year. An SSA report states that Coimbatore Education District excelled in providing facilities for differently abled children by conducting 148 surgeries and distributing assistive devices to 968 children, the highest across the State. According to SSA District Coordinator for IED, irrespective of the number of differently abled children studying in schools, the buildings will be made disabled-friendly. An amount of Rs. 206.02 lakh was allocated for civil works under IED. Around 350 schools would get modified toilets at Rs. 50,000 per unit at a total cost of Rs. 1.74 crore. Around 130 schools would get ramps with hand-rails at Rs. 16,000 each, amounting to Rs. 20.96 lakh, and 316 schools would get hand-rails costing Rs. 3,500 per unit at Rs. 11.06 lakh. Special assessment card for differently abled children called ‘Individual Education Plan’ was remodelled this year to focus on the disability category to trace the students’ improvement in basic skills and performance of CWSN. The child’s improvement in factors such as motor skills and behavioural features would be closely monitored based on this. Out of the 7,025 CWSN identified in the district, 5,414 students were studying in regular schools while the rest were provided education and assistance through day-care and resource centres. Exposure visits for around 250 students at Rs. 87,000 would be arranged and Rs. 50,000 allocated for giving training to parents. According to the coordinator, there is very little awareness about CWSN and many parents fail in identifying their wards’ problems and needs. An inclusive sports meet for CWSN is also planned to be held in September-October this year. Out of the 1,250 children covered under home-based education, 100 students with severe disabilities would continue to get Rs. 100 a month for travelling to nearby schools or resource centres. http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/...cle3648907.ece

Bharathiar University ties up with TCS to offer value-added Commerce course In another attempt to involve the industry in redesigning the undergraduate curriculum to include the latest technologies, Bharathiar University and Tata Consultancy Services have come up with a paper called “Finance and Accounting for Business Process” to be offered to commerce students studying in affiliated colleges of the university. This will be a value-addition to the papers offered under the regular curriculum of the colleges and will be included in the academic stream from this academic year. The Centre for Excellence for Accounting and Finance of TCS prepared the ‘Information Technology-based commerce curriculum’ incorporating the latest practical inputs prevalent in commerce-based industries. The colleges, which choose to offer this paper to the students who wish to take it up, can do so in the manner that is best suited to them. As a pilot launch, eight autonomous and five non-autonomous colleges have been identified to implement the paper. It is meant for B.Com., B.Com (CA), BBM, and BBM (CA) students. According to M. Jayakumar, Director, Department of Extension and Career Guidance, Bharathiar University, there are 10 units in the paper that the college will offer in a staggered manner, over two or three semesters. “Three workshops were held with representatives from TCS and faculty from the departments of commerce of various colleges, attending them. Industry and institutions deliberated upon and drew up a final set of curricula that can be delivered in 75 hours. However, each college can choose the mode and time of delivery because the content is practical in nature and of a standard that is above that of the normal undergraduate curriculum,” he said. TCS would train teachers of the selected colleges in delivering the content. The trained teachers would take classes for the interested students after college hours. A separate examination for these students would be held. Karunai Athal A., Head, Department of Commerce, PKR Arts College for Women, Gobichettipalayam, who attended the curriculum wrap-up meeting in the university on Tuesday, said all 10 topics were unique and practical in nature. “They have incorporated the emerging trends that will be very useful to students because the normal curriculum text books are mostly theory-based. As a beginning, we plan to offer the paper to selective students. May be from the next year, we can suggest it for all the commerce students. Depending on the students’ ability to grasp the concepts, the hours of class will be made flexible,” she said. Explaining the uniqueness of the paper, S. Poornima, Associate Professor, Department of Business Management, PSGR Krishnammal College for Women, Coimbatore, said the content was IT-oriented, systems-based and did not involve hand-written entries. “It is updated, very in-depth and covers every business aspect. To begin with, the college is planning to offer it from September for the third year students and also the second years. After a trial period, we will decide on the delivery modalities,” she said. The 10-module paper was the first in a series of papers that the university and the corporate plan to include as value-additions to the existing commerce curriculum at the UG level.

I find, many parents started searching good schools for their children over the internet.
It would be useful to have the information like Public / Central board schools , Coaching, Fees range, extra - curricular etc in this forum. I feel these information will not only be useful for parents, but also will boost Coimbatore's image, as we have numerous high-standards international schools started in the city in recent years along with the top schools already functioning. As per the newspaper : We have 20 International schools in coimbatore (cambridge / Swiss standards). Am starting to compile the informations. Please help me if you have further info. Industry Connect 2012 to focus on employability skills Coimbatore, July 8: The student community, academicians and prospective employers gear up for Industry Connect 2012, hosted by the Sri Eshwar College of Engineering, Kondampatti, near Coimbatore on July 13 and 14. It is also a time for stock taking and to know the outcome of the first edition. There has been a constant refrain from the industry that students coming out of colleges generally fall short of industry expectations in possession of necessary skills. This was not something limited to the IT sector that gave a major push to on-campus mass recruitment when the IT boom began more than a decade back, nor is it confined to communication skills only. (The event promo material mentioned that according to Nasscom, only 25 per cent of the 5 lakh engineering students graduating in a year are readily employable, calling for private-public partnership through industry-academia collaboration in talent enhancement). Rapid changes With industries in a constant flux and technology witnessing rapid changes, the changes in syllabi cannot be done in a instant as industries want. The main issue was that students, from studying for about two years for their school final exams that give them ample time to prepare, face university exams every semester or once in about four or five months. Explaining the key takeaway from the first edition of Industry Connect 2011, Dr Sudha Mohanram, Principal, Sri Eshwar College of Engineering, said the exercise had attracted nearly 2,500 students from 179 colleges. But the number of students who followed the two-day event through live Webcast was about six times more of that — a little over 15,000. She said it was not as if only the IT sector wanted its recruits to be tech-savvy. Every industry wanted its potential recruits to be up-to-date in their skills and knowledge. The industries also wanted students to have a mastery over soft and hard skills to be employable. The mismatch between what was taught and what was needed by the industries was held as a factor for the gap in skills. The Industry Connect -2011 was organised with the theme ‘Employment Readiness’ with a view to help students to be aware of the various skill sets to get placements. The corporate participants explained what they expected from students was good creative thinking, problem solving techniques. While colleges provide greater thrust on theoretical knowledge, they should lay emphasis on the practical side too. Asked as to how employers responded to the programme last year, she said the response was positive. Employers have taken the responsibility to enhance employability level among students as part of corporate social responsibility which will be of ‘mutual help for the academics and industry in increasing the recruitment’. Dr Sudha said employability cannot be improved at the college level alone since much of the learning took place during school days. She suggested that communication skills, problem solving, creating thinking should be imparted at the school level itself. The two-day meet will have sessions on employers’ perceptions on employability skills, career enhancement and recruitment trends in the IT, ITES, manufacturing, services and core engineering sectors. Experts will also brief participants about alternative career opportunities available for engineers in social media, current recruitment trends and brief final year students on short-term approach to become employable. The event is being organised Sri Eshwar College of Engineering in association with ICT Academy of Tamil Nadu and Nasscom. ‘The Hindu’ is a media partner for the event.

Become global-ready, students told The three-day international conference “Go Global E” on “Changes and Challenges in Education, Employment and Entrepreneurship” of the Nehru Group of Institutions took off in Coimbatore on Thursday on a note of global preparedness. Being held in association with the ICT Academy of Tamil Nadu and National Entrepreneurship Network, the first day focussed on education. The Hindu is the media partner for the event. Inaugurating the conference, E. Balagurusamy, Member (Education), State Planning Commission, highlighted the importance of the three E’s – education, employment and entrepreneurship. “One of the major reasons for increasing unemployment is that less and less number of engineers are turning entrepreneurs. Only if there were more entrepreneurs, will there be more innovations and production of indigenous things. Importing from countries should stop and engineers should take up the challenge to change the trends of marketing by coming out with their own products. This change should begin from the classroom,” Mr. Balagurusamy said. U.S. Majumder, deputy general manager, Syndicate Bank, Coimbatore, said that lack of commitment was a basic reason for the gap between employment and unemployment. Every institution should identify the talent of students and effectively use them. The conference proceedings were release by Mr. Balagurusamy in the presence of Laode M. Kamaluddin, president, Sultan Agung Islamic University, and P. Krishnadas, Trustee, Nehru Group of Institutions, and P. Krishna Kumar, chief executive officer and secretary of the group. There were sessions on challenges in higher education in India, bench marking and innovations in higher education, cross-border education – their prospects and challenges, and education and employability. The second day would focus on employment and the last day it would be on entrepreneurship. More than 40 experts from the industry and academia are handling the sessions. The valediction would be addressed by M. Siva Kumar, chief executive officer, ICT Academy of Tamil Nadu. He would speak on “The Changing Face of Industry and HR Requirements.”

Education made interesting on social networking platform Amutha Kannan Rather than denying college students something they like the most, Myklassroom.com has used the social networking concept to enhance their learning experience Making learning interesting does not need much. In this age of information technology when most of the services are a finger touch away, companies and entrepreneurs are going that extra mile to ensure that teaching and learning do not lag behind. Rather than denying college students something they like the most, Myklassroom.com has used the social networking concept to enhance their learning experience. Myklassroom.com is a social e-learning platform that blends social networking and e-learning to transform the traditional classroom education into an online collaborative teaching and learning method, according to its founder Natraj Thudupathy. With more than 10 years experience abroad in the technology sector, Mr. Thudupathy has launched this platform targeting colleges and universities. The platform not only connects students and teachers of the same institution, but also other institutions that use the platform. The institution can be anywhere in the world. The virtual space provided by the platform is used by all the stakeholders of an institution based on a Cloud concept. Each person has an individual membership login ID. Most of the content is common. There are various links that enable users to access relevant information. Most of the content is based on the curriculum for each of the undergraduate subjects in the engineering, pure sciences and management domains. The content is available in text, newspaper clippings, audio and video formats. If the user wishes to access content from outside the platform, there is an approval process to add that content to the existing content. Provisions are there for creating online assignments, making presentations, and much more. There is an event calendar that gives students information about all that happens in the member colleges. At present, six colleges in the State, out of which four are in Coimbatore, are members of Myklassroom. Stressing the point that it is not a school / college management software, Mr. Thudupathy says it is a space where students, faculty and administration can collaborate. The login for faculty and administration will be different from that of a student, and the content management is left to the faculty. A department or a college as a whole can adopt the platform. Based on the requirement of the users, value-additions will be made. There is a link “Submit an idea” where anyone can leave an idea that can be included if found good.

1.Education Education, schools, Instituitions, universities and related news and discussion. 2. Science and technology. I think the number of science related news around Coimbatore are good enough to post here. Apparently, we can add new technology invented by Coimbatore scientists or students. Recently space exhibition was held at bharathiar university and many new findings in biological research from Agri university, sugarcane breeding institute, bharathiar university, salim ali centre for ornithology and natural history are being created waves among science students. It is just an idea. Your suggestions are highly appreciated! |

Budding scientists showcase their innovations
Top 40 projects to be selected for national-level expo to be held in Delhi
There were many school students, who had come to Coimbatore to display their scientific innovations, were the hand-picked ones from the whole of the State, and the exhibits / projects that they had displayed at Sri Krishna College of Engineering and Technology here on Friday too were as unique. As many as 418 school children selected from 15 schools in 32 districts of the State had taken part in the two-day exhibition held under the aegis of the ‘Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research’ (INSPIRE) of the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. The expo was conducted in collaboration with Tamil Nadu Science and Technology Centre, Chennai, and the college. Working model On the basis of a project presentation, 15 to 20 students in each school in each district were given Rs. 5,000 by the DST for preparing a working model of the project. According to A. Ramesh, Head, Department of Mechanical Engineering of the college, who is the co-ordinator of the exhibition, the State-finalists were selected from a larger number of participants who took part in a district-level exhibition. Earlier, inaugurating the expo, P. Palaniappan, Higher Education Minister, said the INSPIRE programme would enable children develop passion for research early in life. Prizes “A panel of judges will select the top 40 projects to be sent to the national-level expo to be held in Delhi. All 40 students will receive one sovereign gold coin. Next best 40 projects will receive silver coins, and 80 others will receive books as prizes,” the Minister said. T.S. Sridhar, Additional Chief Secretary, Department of Higher Education, Government of Tamil Nadu, urged children to develop a scientific temper. “Only this will lead to curiosity and questions and that in turn will lead to new concepts and discoveries. Many societal problems can only be solved scientifically. Science cities that are coming up will focus on developing scientific temperament in students. Mission 2023 of Chief Minister Jayalalithaa aims at making Tamil Nadu the innovation capital and knowledge hub of India,” he said. Patent The focus of the State was to ensure quality, access and equity in education to all. Viable projects of the students would not only be awarded prizes, but also be helped to be patented, he added. S.M. Velusamy, Mayor of Coimbatore Corporation, S. Malarvizhi, chairperson and managing trustee, Sri Krishna and VLB Institutions, P. Iyamperumal, executive director, Tamil Nadu Science and Technology Centre, spoke. The expo, which drew school students in droves, will end on Saturday with the valediction where the prize winners will be felicitated. http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/...cle3873741.ece |

Research in education
National conference on 'environmental challenges towards waste management in India' at P A College of Education in Pollachi
Teachers training colleges should also conduct research in education, said Tamil Nadu Teachers' Education University (TNTEU) Vice Chancellor, G Visvanathan. He was speaking to the press after attending the inaugural function of a two day national conference on 'environmental challenges towards waste management in India' at P A College of Education in Pollachi on Friday. "We want to make the university a centre for research in education," he said. Towards this end, teachers' training colleges affiliated to the university will be encouraged to conduct M Phil and Phd programmes in education. If colleges offering ME.d courses have faculties with Phd in education, and are accredited by the National Accreditation and Assessment Council (NAAC), they will be allowed to conduct M Phil and Phd programmes. Only few colleges are at present offering such programmes, he said. This is part of the efforts taken to improve the quality of teachers' education in the state, he said. Colleges have been instructed to take strict measures to curb absentees. On a daily basis, they email the list of absent students. University officials will also conduct surprise visits to verify authenticity of reports. Students with less than 75 percent attendance will not be allowed to appear for the examinations. Colleges have also been warned against charging more than what has been stipulated by the government. He warned that affiliations of colleges which do not follow instructions will be cancelled. Visvanathan said that more topics on teaching methods have been added to the syllabus. Content on Teachers' Eligibility Test (TET) will be made part of the syllabus. This will help trainees crack tests with ease. It will be made mandatory that BE.d students complete 40 days of teaching in a school. According to sources, four year BA.Ed and BSc.Ed courses are being considered apart from the one year BE.d courses which are presently offered. After completing class 12, students could join these programmes where they will graduate with teachers' training. However, talks are only at a preliminary stage. Similar courses were conducted in some universities earlier but they were not entirely successful. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/c...w/16306183.cms |

Countdown for selecting ‘best and most creative’ teachers begins
Final round of competition to be held on September 21 It was time for teachers of higher educational institutions to don the thinking cap. But for a change, they did not do so for the sake of their students or the institution they were attached to. Nearly 70 of them did that to showcase their creative talent and domain knowledge at a special event organised for them here on Saturday. They were taking part at the preliminary round of the Teachers’ Day competition organised by the Education Panel of the Coimbatore Zone of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). And, those judging them were representatives from the industry. The competition, aimed at selecting the “best and most creative among the teachers of higher education institutions” in the region, had faculty from colleges and universities competing in two events, either individually or as a team of two. As many as 31 teams took part in “Storm in a Tea Cup”, which involved a case writing exercise based on real-time experience in the industry, and 35 took part in “Into the Thinking Maps”, which had teachers teach a topic given to them using innovative teaching methodology. As many as 12 judges were formed into six teams, three each for an event. “Storm in a Tea Cup” contestants visited industries and wrote a relevant case study that underlined some valid issue of the organisation. They presented the case study in front of the judges and also answered relevant questions. As many as 60 management students from various institutions also witnessed the presentations. The “Into the Thinking Maps” contestants took 15-minute classes on any one of the following topics – cyber security, mobile computing, green infrastructure, gadgets for communication, green technology in automobiles, changing trends of fabric in fashion, India’s economic growth from 1947 to 2025, use of nano-science in day-to-day life, and mass media to touch lives. The competition took off at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International School of Textiles and Management with convenor of the CII Education Panel Senthil Ganesh, Managing Trustee, RVS Educational Institutions, formally welcoming the contestants. After that it was a buzz of activity with presentations happening one after the other. After four hours of classroom sessions, the contestants and judges were a “tired but happy lot”. The judges were appreciative of the effort that the teachers had put in. Summing up after the competitions, Sheela Ramachandran, Vice-Chancellor of Avinashilingam University for Women, and co-convenor of the CII Education Panel, said that the initiative was a novel attempt by the Coimbatore Zone of CII. “Best eight finalists will be selected for each event and the final round of the competition will be held on September 21. The teaching methodology competition has been video recorded and this will be uploaded on Facebook in the Teachers’ Day competition page. Students can ‘like’ and ‘comment’ on the presentations. The presentation that gets the maximum number of ‘likes’ will get a special prize,” she said. The case studies submitted for the competition would be compiled in the form a book. Corporation felicitates top scorers in public exams
It was one of the proudest moment for V Angamuthu, an electrician on call, near Ramanathapuram in the city when his daughter A Annapoorni walked up to the stage and collected the gold medal for scoring the highest marks in Class 12 public examination among corporation school students. The top scorers from the Coimbatore corporation schools were felicitated on Saturday evening at a function held at the corporation auditorium in RS Puram. "I am really proud that my daughter had made it a point to work hard in school and also ensure that she gets an opportunity to pursue higher studies," said Angamuthu after the felicitation programme. Annapoorni was a student of Corporation Girls Higher Secondary school in Ramakrishnapuram and scored 1149 out of 1200 to emerge as the top scorer in corporation schools. Similar emotions flowed for A Govindaraj, a private security guard, as he sat on the corner seat in the second row of the auditorium to see his daughter G Manimekhalai walk to receive her four gram gold medal for the second highest scorer. Manimekhalai scored 1132 in the exam. She was a student of Corporation Girls Higher Secondary school on Oppanakara street. M Bhavani who came third with 1129 out of 1200 was also awarded a gram gold medal in the presence of her father V Murugan, a police constable with the district police force. All three of them were also given certificates of merit at the function and are presently pursuing Bcom I year with corporate secretaryship at PSG College of Arts and Science in the city. Gold medals were also awarded to R Sivakami, R Nandhitha Sree and P Sambhavi for the highest marks in Class 10 examination. The free distribution of laptops to 2,584 students from various corporation schools in the city was also held at the event. Cash awards worth Rs1,32,400 were also distributed to 173 students. Cash awards of Rs1,000 were given to 103 Class 12 students who scored a total aggregate of over 1,000 in the exams and 56 Class X students with total marks of more than 450 were given Rs500. 14 students who registered centum performances in various subjects were given Rs100 each at the event. City mayor SM Velusamy, district collector M Karunagaran, corporation commissioner TK Ponnusamy, legislators from Coimbatore and senior officials from Coimbatore municipal corporation and district administration attended the function. "It is a very positive sign to realise that students from corporation and government schools are scoring high marks in the public examination. It is very heartening as most of these students hail from middle class and lower middle class families," said M Karunagaran, district collector, Coimbatore. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/c...w/16318756.cms |
