The oil history is rich in northwest Pennsylvania. After the world's first commercial oil well was drilled in 1859 south of Titusville, oil became the dominant economy of the region and made scores of communities into boomtowns. Franklin, the seat of Venango County, was one such town, and much of the architecture from that era remains. The Galena-Signal Oil Company Headquarters were built on Liberty Street in Franklin. The office building was built in 1901 and served as the headquarters for the oil company until 1931.

The old Mountain Springs Hotel, on Main Street at Spring Garden Street in Ephrata. The hotel was built in 1848 as a resort and once hosted Presidents Buchanan, Lincoln, and Grant in its history. After the resort declined, it became a hospital from 1937 to 1949. The building was abandoned in 1988, and in 2004 much of the property was demolished for redevelopment, with the original hotel building saved for reuse.

The Ephrata Cloister, off of Main Street in Ephrata. The cloister was started in 1732 by Johann Konrad Beissel for his Seventh Day Anabaptist group. The Saal, on the right, was built in 1740 and is the oldest surviving structure at the cloister. It functioned as the meetinghouse for the community. On the left is the Bake House, which functioned as the kitchen for the community.
