Thanks for this wonderful and informative thread. Not having been there I had no idea Roumania possessed so many marvellous Orthodox churches. IMO Hagia Sophia, Constantinople (Istanbul) is possibly the most important religious building in the world having witnessed so much important history from the time of the Eastern Roman Empire to our modern era - it is a MUST SEE site on my travel agenda.

I think the church was built using stones and architectural elements from pre-Christian/Classical Greek buildings, that's why it looks so...eclectic. There's is a smaller, half-ruined church in Densuș, Romania. It was built in a similar fashion in the 7th century with additions made in the 13th century on the site of a 2nd century Roman temple, with some materials from Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa, the capital of Roman Dacia.

P.S. It seems that Agia Fotini was built in the 1970's using local materials. The style is a juxtaposition of traditional Greek design and Byzantine church architecture. Close enough.
