I have travelled once from Chennai to Tuticorin through air(8 months back), but no bus facilities found toTirunelveli. Had bitter experience. Government should definitely arrange transport facilities from airport to Tirunelveli . If they do so, then Spicejet probably can expect more crowd.
No transport(bus) facilities being arranged again from Tirunelveli to Tuticorin airport, hence we go for cab bookings, where the cost is unbearable.
If there are some ways to reduce our transport expenses, please let me know.

Entrepreneur woos investors

A multi-million dollar project for aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) is proposed to be set up under public-private partnership in India’s Tamil Nadu state where foreign investors and NRIs will have opportunities, said R Sarath Kumar, prominent south Indian actor, politician and entrepreneur.
A project report for the venture has already been prepared by Tata Consultancy, he said. Suitable land is available for the MRO facility in Valliyoor in southern Tamil Nadu, which requires about 1,400 acres.
“We hope it can be set up in a special economic zone where there will be lots of incentives for investors,” said Kumar, who is on a private visit to Doha.“The project is on the drawing board, but we are assured of Tamil Nadu government support. So the prospects for a public-private partnership (PPP) initiative are bright,” Kumar told Gulf Times yesterday.

He said investment ranging between $140mn and $150mn was required for the proposed MRO facility. “Such a facility will come in handy given the projected growth in India’s civil aviation over the next few years.”

“We will have some 300 new aircraft joining the fleet of various airlines over the next two years. Air travel is gaining in popularity with Indian economy rapidly expanding - more people take to the skies now as they need to travel faster,” Kumar said.

He said the MRO facility would result in the overall development of Valliyoor and places around it. A township will come up there with hotels, recreation facilities among others. Water requirement for such a development can be met through desalination, said Kumar, president of the All India Samathuva Makkal Katchi (AISMK) and a member of Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from Tenkasi.
Kumar said he had presented the project to some investors in Qatar and they have evinced interest in it.

“This is workable and based on the response from investors from Qatar and India among other places, I will meet Tamil Nadu chief minister to take it up further,” Kumar said.

He said another project proposed was a flying school in Pondicherry, a Union Territory, bordering Tamil Nadu.
“We are signing a memorandum of standing with Pacific Flying School from Canada for the flying school, which aims to cut down on the time required to acquire a commercial pilot’s license - at least by a year. We will provide state-of-the-art training in our proposed flying school in Pondicherry, where infrastructure is in place. The Pondicherry Government has extended all possible assistance,” Kumar said.Kumar said investors would also have “tremendous” prospects in Tamil Nadu, which has set up Vision 2023 that aims at a “self-sufficient” state in the next 10 years.

Investment to the tune of $300bn was required to realise this. “We need investments in our infrastructure – roads, bridges, transport network and education, health and agriculture sectors,” he said.

Kumar stressed the need for more focus on India’s agriculture sector, which he said, was not getting the attention it deserved.
“All said and done, we are an agrarian economy and we should not take our eyes off our farmers and farm lands. If we need to import foodstuff again, there is no meaning in achieving economic growth. To kick start agriculture again, we need to have a separate budget for the farm sector. We need to empower our farmers and ensure farming is profitable so that more people will take to agriculture again,” suggested Kumar, also the president of the South Indian Film Artistes’ Association.

Plan to open international school in Doha

The promoters of The New International School in Tenkasi in India’s Tamil Nadu state are considering the prospects of bringing the institution to Doha next year.
“The proposal is to start the New International School in Doha in the challenging International Baccalaureate curriculum probably in 2013,” said prominent south Indian film actor R Sarath Kumar, also the chairman of the school.
The curriculum of the new school will be innovative with an enquiry-based teaching / learning methodology, focusing on attainment of academic excellence in both core and optional subjects.
“We aim at the overall personality development by placing creativity and innovation and the heart of learning experience. We will have a multinational teaching faculty,” Kumar said.

Now comes an end to a 108 year old scenic passenger route – a 51 km track from Shengottai to Punalur. There was emotional farewell along the route. This route had started way back in 1873 and took 27 years to complete. The first goods train ran in 1902 and passengers were on in 1904. It is one of the last gauge conversion works to be taken up in Tamilnadu. This was a tiny five compartment train taking over 100 minutes to reach Sengottai near Courtallam in Tamilnadu from Punalur in Kerala. The passengers would have a breath taking view of Western Ghats as the train passes through tunnels, the longest one being the one between Bhagawathipuram and Aryankavu. The journey provided pristine view of wild life sanctuary, captivating waterfalls, teak plantations, sandalwood plantations and freshwater mangroves.

The Railway stations from Sengottai were Bhagavathipuram, Aryankavu, Edapalayam, Kathurthy, Tenmalai, Ottakkal, Edaman and Punalur.

The suspension bridge at Punalur is one of its kind in South India – built in 1877 by Albert Henry across kallada river. There is some history (source : IFRCA) that the Maharaja of Travancore had published of the first train trip on 1st June 1904; but there were heavy monsoon rains and a portion of the tunnel near Aryankavu had caved in. Still two steam locomotives were brought to Quilon to run the Punalur Quilon leg. It is written that these locos were brought from Shengottai to Tuticorin and transported to Quilon by ship. The first train was flagged by the Maharaja himself and had 21 salute gun fire. The Quilon Shengottai line was thrown open on 26/11/1904.
