Ricardo Legorreta 1931-2011

Chicago Tribune

Quote:
Architect Ricardo Legorreta, 80, dies; used bold colors in projects including U. of C. dorm, Pritzker house

Ricardo Legorreta, 80, the celebrated Mexican architect whose joyful, color-splashed buildings included a dormitory at the University of Chicago and a vacation house for Chicago philanthropist Cindy Pritzker, died Friday, Dec. 30.

Mexican officials did not give the cause in announcing Mr. Legorreta's death.

A protege of the great Mexican architect Luis Barragan, who died in 1988, Legorreta used bright colors, thick masonry walls and sharply incised facades that created dramatic shadow patterns in the bright Mexican sun.

His best-known building is Mexico City's Camino Real hotel, built in 1968 with walls covered in pink, but he also designed art museums, libraries and a purple, 10-story bell tower in the middle of Los Angeles' Pershing Square. The buildings were modern yet regional, departing from the universal language of the steel-and-glass box.

"He led an entire generation of architects, especially in the Southern Hemisphere of the Americas, toward an architecture which was much more sensitive to their environment," said Chicago architect Adrian Smith, who first worked with Mr. Legorreta in the late 1970s on an unbuilt design for a corporate headquarters in Mexico.

Can't say that I'm a fan of all his works but the Financial Building is a great construction and the Hotel in Bilbao is the first building that I remembered immediately from my architecture lessons on the university about Bilbao.
It's always sad to see great designers go.
