GENERELL UTVIKLING | Trondheim som den kunne ha vært
I think it could be fun to have a thread dedicated to ideas that fell through, designs that were never used and projects that were never completed. In short, Trondheim as it could have been.
I will start with the main building of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), formerly the Norwegian Institute of Technology (NTH). The chosen design was created by Bredo Greve, but there were four other rewarded designs that I will present in this post. "Vis à vis Domkirken", Bredo Greve ![]() Picture taken from Wikimedia Commons.[1] "Daggry", Thorvald Astrup ![]() Picture taken from Wikimedia Commons.[2] "Dixi", Henrik Nissen ![]() Picture taken from Wikimedia Commons.[3] "Teknikerborgen", Einar Oscar Schou ![]() Picture taken from Wikimedia Commons.[4] "Abel", Olaf Lilloe ![]() Picture taken from Wikimedia Commons.[5] I think the latter two are quite good, but I'm glad they chose Bredo Greve's design. To be continued...

Glad de valgte Vis à vis Domkirken selv om Dixi og Teknikerborgen ser helt gri ut også. Abel blir litt for mye ripoff for min del.
Ser fram til mer!

Next up is the highrise known as Trekanten at Rosten. I took the picture below with my mobile a couple of days ago.
![]() When this was built in the late Eighties the plan was to build two highrises. The second one was however never built, presumably due to the banking crisis. The picture below shows how it would have looked.

I have been quite busy lately, but I'll try to post another project soon. By the way, has there been a collective decision to drop English as the forum language?

det er blitt bestemt at du kan bruke det språket du helst vil bruke, dog det er satt anbefaling om å bruke lokalt språk i seksjonene (Norge, Sverige, Finland osv.).

It is interesting to think that the cathedral could have looked so different. You take it for granted the way it is.
There is a little cluster of run-down buildings approximately where this would have stood. I would assume that the university own them.

I wouldn't mind if they actually went through with some of the elements from Henrik Bulls proposal, seemed like the main tower was a lot taller and more majestic.

And at the same time the western wall was still in ruins. Nidarosdomen has certainly had many ups and downs over the centuries.Nidarosdomen in 1878, the year the first phase in reconstruction works started. ![]() Photographer: Erik Olsen (1835 - 1920) |

Trondhjems Tekniske Mellomskole
Forslagstegning til Trondhjems Tekniske Mellomskoles (forløperen til NTH/NTNU) bygning i Munkegaten 1 (dagens rådhus). Ikke så forferdelig ulikt det faktiske bygget.

the foundation of the tower is too weak to support a higher tower, that's the reason Christie didn't make it any taller during the recontstruction

That is what the building actually looked like before being rebuilt prior to becoming the city hall in 1930.

They took a beautiful classical building and completely ruined it. image hosted on flickr ![]() Jernbanestasjonen by Trondheim Byarkiv, on Flickr image hosted on flickr ![]() by the train station by a kallitype, on Flickr I wish they could restore it, but I think it is unlikely.

The old railroadstation looks a lot like Østbanehallen. Are they from the same periode?

This was the second main railway station in Trondheim, completed as the terminal station for the Meråker line (to Sweden) in 1883. The first was located at Kalvskinnet and opened in 1864 as the terminal station for the Støren line. The Meråker line station soon became the central station though, before that term was invented.
Østbanestasjonen was opened in 1854, but was rehabilitated in 1882. I don't know how encompassing the rehabilitation was though.
