Seems pretty effective

IIRC the Danes tried this setup at exits from the Lillebæltsbroen bridge. I'm not sure if the system has been introduced anywhere else or if it's still there.
AFAIK it's still being tested at a number of exit ramps across the nationa dn is working really well, so is probable going to be the standard at all exit ramps in the future..

It sounds like overkill to me, to have spikes that rise up after a car is detected. Does it really happen that often there?

I have to repeat once more that it doesn’t happen often here, not more than in Au, but we give it much more attention than others in the world

Sorry, but it is not yet officially announced as acceptable system for WWD. We will see what will be for a year or two.

In Europe we have to agree what sign to chose to define WWD.
There are a few proposals at the moment, e.g.:

Many WW drivers are not aware of the alerts provided by signals, even reinforced ones. Only solutions for them is that feature.
Here you are these in France.

Mr.Zoran Mitanovski from Pula discovered old spike system against WWD. Obviously, he was too late to get certificate for the patent:

I had no idea that so many WWD happen in the USA every day.
These are statistics for USA (years:1996-2000):

Please rethink: main goal of directional signage is serving those who don't know the situation and need to know directional information.

You are right about this, but please don't try to teach me. I'm a traffic engineer for over 20 years and directional signage is part of my everyday work.

No, that's incorrect. When someone not known to the situation approaches, a sign with the roadnumber on it will create questions to the driver who wants to drive that freeway in the other direction. Not showing that information can lead to dangerous situations, i.e. drivers taking the wrong onramp and turning when they find out they are driving in the wrong direction.

That's a good solution. The south direction is being shown, but when approaching the first intersection drivers won't see an arrow pointing in the wrong direction. But there are other possibilities for the time being that there isn't enough money available for a infrastructural reconstruction; i.e. using a viaduct symbol, using short contourlines for showing the offramp in your signs, etcetera.
http://maps.google.nl/maps?hl=nl&ll=...28.83,,2,-1.05

So I repeat: main goal should be a safe infrastructural design. Creating a good signface is also important, of course. But don't withhold important directional information to people unknown to the situation.
