Nope. I only put the whole region in this category. Wallonia represents a huge part of Belgium. Not very populated, but very decaying. You can also see that medium income is quite low there (also like Southern Italy or Southern Spain).
I'm not chilean. |

It is the same of writing that the Saudi Arabian desert is very prosperous and developed because they have so much money due to oil! In any case, even measured by objective metrics (houses with proper sewage disposal, paved roads, presence of telephones and household appliances etc.), I doubt the countryside of Latin American countries was that developed in the 1970s, even in Chile and Argentina. You had a bunch of very nice country houses built after lavish European styles.

This Acosta is such a joke. I love is rankings and how he "puts" different countries above or below others, because he clearly knows that NZ is above France, or Belgium is below UK, or whatever
![]() UN, OECD, IMF, are you guys sleeping???? Acosta is your men, he'll do all the rankings you need, because he clearly knows about this stuff

Just to set the record straight on New Zealand, yes we have very high quality of life overall, on par with the likes of Australia, Finland or Canada.
However as mentioned, poverty (especially for children) is a major issue and only getting worse. The gap between rich and poor is (and has been for a long time) widening, and I don't need to tell you guys the disadvatages that come with that. With regard to public transportation, it is slowly getting better but New Zealand is a very car-oriented country (due to decision making in the 50's and 60's mostly). At this point both trains and buses are still very underfunded, often unreliable in major cities and not terribly modern. There are some signs that light rail or subways will be implemented in Auckland or Wellington soon, but will likely have corners cut to save money. Transport otherwise is generally very good - our roads are mostly in excellent condition and getting better and safer every year, and we have many modern, efficient airports.

Very nice, spotila. I think New Zealand is very underrated. Yeah, that's true, everybody knows that it's a awesome spot of quality of life, but they tend to underrate its development.
Yeah, I knew that NZ had a problem with children on poverty, but some friends have been to NZ and they only made cumpliments about the day-on new zealander life. They've seen no poverty around. Have you ever been to Charleroi? Well, to be fair, I have to say that the belgian government is doing very good improvements in roads, for an example. I can see the decay isn't currently real, but in Charleroi you still can see so many examples of it. Last edited by Acosta; January 19th, 2012 at 03:49 PM. |

That's quite of unfair, i'm Chilean, and i would pray for Chile to start looking more to Europe and not to the US as an example to follow. And most of chilean don't believe themselves europeans. and BTW i don't suffer from megalomania.

I haven't met that many Chileans, but when I did an exchange in Barcelona a couple of years ago, there were a group of Chilean students from Santiago and most of them would have not be distinguished in their way of thinking or acting as compared to most of the other European people at my university. They seemed to be really easily integrated in the Barcelona way of life, even more so than some Americans, that could easily be spotted from miles away.

Greece - if it won't grow back. It's been in recession for at least 3 years now which is crazy. it's technically in depression with sustained high debt + high interest, high deficit, negative growth, high unemployment. it's pretty messed up, imo.

One could argue back and forth as to whether these Gulf countries are actually "developed" or not as economic development is more than just money. Some, however, have very high incomes and eventhough the gap between the rich and the poor maybe high, the general standard of living for the average person is still quite decent. Many, like UAE, have excellent education, health, and social services. It will be interesting to see what becomes of these nations when the world dependency on oil really starts to decline. |
