Holmesburg Prison in Philly

I got the chance to shoot Holmesburg prison in Philly last week after a couple of months of contact with the PR people. Holmesburg has an incredibly interesting history marked with prison dermatological experiments funded by DOW Chemical and Johnson and Johnson. One such experiment saw 70 prisoners injected with dioxin to test their chloracne product. Holmesburg was also the site of a double murder of the Warden and Deputy Warden in 1973 during a prison riot.

Panopticon |paˈnäptiˌkän| - a circular prison with cells arranged around a central well, from which prisoners could at all times be observed.

Mattress |ˈma-trəs| - a usually rectangular pad of heavy cloth filled with soft material or an arrangement of coiled springs, used as or on a bed.

Cell |ˈsel| - a single room (as in a convent or prison) usually for one person

Prison |ˈpri-zən| - a place of confinement especially for lawbreakers; specifically : an institution (as one under state jurisdiction) for confinement of persons convicted of serious crimes

Porn |ˈpȯrn| - material (as books or a photograph) that depicts erotic behavior and is intended to cause sexual excitement

Nature |ˈnā-chər| - a kind or class usually distinguished by fundamental or essential characteristics

Architecture |ˈär-kə-ˌtek-chər| - the art or science of building; specifically : the art or practice of designing and building structures and especially habitable ones

Watchtower |ˈwäch-ˌtau̇(-ə)r| - a tower that is used by a person who guards or watches a place
