JWTZ lilianzishwa tarehe 01 Septemba, 1964 likiwa na lengo la kulinda uhuru, na mipaka ya Jamhuri ya Muungano wa Tanzania. JWTZ lina majukumu yafuatayo:

Ulinzi wa mipaka ya Jamhuri ya Muungano wa Tanzania dhidi ya adui.
Kutoa mafunzo ya kivita kwa maafisa na askari ili kumshinda adui.
Kutoa msaada unaohitajika kwa mamlaka za Serikali katika hali ya hatari na maafa yatokanayo na nguvu za asili.
Kusaidia uwezo wa mamlaka ya Serikali katika kudhibiti ghasia au vurugu ndani ya nchi.
Kuendesha na kusimamia mafunzo ya mgambo.
Kushiriki katika shughuli za kulinda amani duniani.
