Disturbing... but not so much at the same time: these speeches seem to stem more from desesperation then anything else. They are perfectly aware that their hold on society is eroding, especially amongst the younger generation. They are trying to pass all these laws right now because it will be impossible for them to do so in just a few years...

I was on the Keele bus today, and noticed a gangsta-type sitting directly behind the driver (in the courtesy seats). He was giving people 'badass' looks as they got on the bus, and was listening to his ipod loud enough for everyone to hear, bopping to the music. After a few stops, the bus got full enough for most of the seats to be taken. Soon after, an elderly woman got on the bus, and I looked curiously to see if anyone would get up and let her sit down, instead of the usual 'look at the ground and pretend I don't see this person who could use the seat more than me' scenario. Next thing you know, the thug stands up, smiles, and says "please, take a seat ma'am." She looked as surprised as I felt, and took the seat after thanking him. This made me feel good inside, and gave me some hope for this city again.
Anyway, that's my story and it's what caught my eyes today. |

Nice story! Renews one's faith in mankind! Just goes to show you can't judge a book by the cover.

I saw that too. Wasn't it because of some flame war due to a bunch of people down rating a city skyline or something?

More like survival of the fittest!
I don't know if it is the same in other province, but in Quebec, there is a big push for students in High School to go into Vocational education. Which is fine, but who goes into vocation and who goes into a professional field?

Shouldn't that be up to the student and the market? If you are going to school with future employment in mind (people seem to forget that there can be other reasons), then it's not too difficult to figure out what fields offer the best prospects.

Maybe I'm a big old commie pinko, but I think that for students with excellent grades there should be big government assistance. The ones who scrape in with minimal marks can pay the regular rate; this would encourage harder studying in high school.

Yes, but scholarships are not the same as Government support; they are at the whim and mercy of private foundations. They can still exist, but I am talking about a broader support system than just rewarding the lucky top 0.5 percentile. I mean helping all students who have an excellent, but not perfect record. I think investing in higher education is an EXCELLENT investment in the country's future and a good use of taxpayer money. Certainly better than building new and bigger prisons.

I am absolutely agreed with you 100% on this, even though I am not a fan of commie but they do tend to invested heavily into those good students with the poor parents,by support the fees so those students can free their mind and focus just into study.Yes Canada do have enough spare money to help those good students in need and in return, those students will help to build a stronger, better Canada in the future for sure.

Studying will soon be only something for the Elite as it used to be.
