Here's a couple more renders and a bit of info on the new Art & Design School. From Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios. Apologies if these are not the most up to date ones.

Following a competitive interview process, we were appointed to work with Manchester Metropolitan University on this major extension of the Faculty of Art and Design.

A highly visible new vertical gallery space creates a new 'Window on the Arts' for the Faculty. It includes a spectacular new entrance gallery, circulation and exhibition zone, and provides strong linkages both vertically and horizontally between the existing Chatham Tower and the new building.

The gallery space acts as a shop window providing a showcase for the Faculty of Art and Design to the University and the City, while the hybrid studio spaces beyond offer flexible and adaptable space, appropriate for the changing needs of 21st century Arts education.
Inspiration for the new Art and Design school draws from the traditional warehouse typology, whilst applying a modern interpretation.

Situated in the centre of Manchester, this is an historic site adjacent to the original School of Art, the Grosvenor Building, which was built in 1880 and included LS Lowry among former students.

MMU seeks construction partner

Quote:
Manchester Metropolitan University has published a tender for a £25m construction and refurbishment contract for buildings for its Faculty of Art and Design department.

The 16-month contract consists of the refurbishment of the 93,000 sq ft Chatham tower and the construction of a 78,000 sq ft new build facility on the site of the former Undercroft building on the All Saints campus.

Feilden Clegg Bradley was appointed as project architects last September.

The university's separate £120m plans for a new Birley Fields campus in Hulme, designed by John McAslan & Partners, was one of the projects which has fallen victim to the North West Development Agency's £52m spending cuts. MMU hoped to secure funding towards the Birley Fields campus but it was announced last Monday the agency will not be funding the project.

Deadline for submitting tenders is 12pm on Friday 20 August.

This one crept up on me: I didn't register the proposals on this thread until I suddenly found the undercroft building demolished.

But I do feel more than a tinge of regret that yet another of the fine buildings produced in the 1960s by Besant Roberts and the City Architect department is being demolished or altered out of recognition. There is little reason why most modern buildings should be kept beyond their useful life, especially when the space is needed for something new.

But did they need to reclad the tower so unsympathetically? These have been valued elements in the streetscape of the Education Precinct for 40 years. Couldn't they have been retained and the newbuild desing have been more sympathetic?

Morgan Sindall starts on MMU extension
7 Apr 2011, 08:43

The construction, infrastructure and design business has started work on a £23m building at Manchester Metropolitan University.

The new space will be used by Manchester School of Art offering undergraduate and postgraduate art, design, media and architectural courses.

To make way for the new 96,875 sq ft building, a 1970s structure on the corner of Cavendish Street and Higher Chatham Street in the city centre was recently demolished.

Designed by architect Fielden Clegg Bradley Studios, the new building will include teaching space, new workshops, a roof garden and gallery.

The adjoining 86,111 sq ft Chatham Tower will be retained and refurbished, and connected to a new adjacent seven-storey gallery. The old structure will be clad in black horizontal stripes. Work is due to be complete in summer 2012.

Morgan Sindall completed work on MMU's design and technology workshops last year.

Morgan Sindall was awarded the contract following a four-way single-stage design and building tender process.

Prof David Crow, dean of the faculty of art and design at Manchester Metropolitan University, said: "These improvements will help bolster our reputation as one of the UK's leading providers of art and design courses, enhancing the quality of our teaching and improving the student experience. The new building will be a striking design statement in its own right too.

"Having worked with Morgan Sindall before, we already have the assurance they can deliver on time and to budget, while minimising disruption on a busy student campus. These were very important factors during the procurement stage."
