Travelling to South Africa: Legal and Medical Essentials?

I'm currently planning my GAP year, which will include working for 3 months on a horse farm in South Africa. What legal and medical documents/vaccinations etc will I need to prepare, and which ones will I need to take with me? (I figured that I would need my passport!) I would love to know as I am currently working out the cost for the whole experience (which is expensive as it is!). And if you have any tips in general in regards to travelling to South Africa, I would love to know!

I will be on the coast in the Eastern Cape, if this is required information.
