Xitang, a small city near Shanghai, Venezia-like

Xitang became the first city to visit this time during my stay in China. I even can't say whether it is a city or a town or even a village as it has no high-rises yet its territory is not that small. I was astonished by what I could see there all-together - luxury restaurant & cars, cocks walking in the streets, dirt houses etc. In the night, the city becomes just marvelous, I'll show it later.

We came to Xitang right after the Airport, we didn't have time to get home in Hangzhou and relax, so, by the end of the day we were exhausted. However, I can stand it rather firmly as I can always see smth new.

Right after Pudong Airport we took a highway coming trough South boroughs of Shanghai.

I couls see farms and fields and meadows (it was all some 50 - 60 km from Shanghai city center), villages with typical Chinese modern village architecture as well as commieblocks looking a bit like those in Russia but still nicer.

Then there I saw a sign showing Donghai bridge. Pity, but I didn't manage to see this masterpiece of mankind. However, we passed over the bridge that was remarkable, too, its pillars are some 150 m high... Unfortunately, I don't know its name but I can say it is some 2 km from metro line 8 terminus - Shanghai Aerospace museum.

I had seen this bridge in 2006 from a shuttle bus between Hongqiao and Pudong but I couldn't take a picture of.

They say Zhejiang is a more generous province, so they always have two "autogrills" and petrol stations on both sides of the highway. Not like here, in Shanghai...

However, this petrol stations also features its own flyover...

Here, Shanghai region is over and we are entering Zhejiang province.

Upon arrival in Xitang, we left the car and went to a cafe to have a delicious and too spicy huo guo.

Here we finally left our Polo and went to the Old town. The entrance is not free of charge but we managed to enter free, officially.

Let's move on...

As I said before, Xitang turned out to be an amazing city with lots of totally different stuff contrasting with one another. You can find there ancient curved houses or huts (that are preserved in this state for historical reasons and for attracting tourists), cocks walking down the streets, and quite costly cars...

http://fotki.yandex.ru/users/night-c...m/view/464905/

An even more costly vehicle:

A man at the left is a worker laying border stone.

Some images of car park. Here I noticed some brands and models we have almost forgotten..

The basement is made from concrete:

Buick Lacrosse:

Chinese "tuning" similar to that in Russia mostly practised by Caucasians or youth:

More pictures of the square.

The above mentioned ****:

Let's enter the Old town. At first I was a bit shocked by how dirty it was.

The ancient part of Xitang is kind of labyrinth with ols houses and huts, narrow streets. The houses are not sometimes in quite proper state but they are not reconstructed or torn down to keep the authenticity. Some are over several centuries.
There are lots of tourist from China and South Korea, so many signs are in Hangeul. No English at all.

LIttle quarrel I was a witness of. Many people gathered to watch. It was not very agressive. In general, I didn't understand what is was all about.

Some streets and passages are no more than 70 cm wide:

To be continued.

The highway looks great. Marvelous thread, very authentic. Are the narrow passageways common in China? I am looking forward to the continuation.

Thank you as well. Sure I will continue. The highway belongs to Shanghai, and the town of Xitang to Zhejiang province, as Oliver999 said. But the town is situated right to the west of shanghai, not to the south.

Now, if I may, I'd like to carry on.

The town is also interesting for its canals. In the posts above you can't see it or feel it but as we moved deeper in the old town I started to notice water thought some very narrow streets. I immediately thoughts of the city of Annecy in Switzerland I had been to in July. Not of Venice, but Annecy.

http://fotki.yandex.ru/users/night-c...m/view/464943/

Later we went to the Button museum. I don't know why but I liked this "specialization", it seemed to me candid and kind... Althought we spent there some 15 minutes, I will remember it forever. Just a small piece of plain happiness.
I saw there quite a large group of Korean students with a Chinese guide.
And I also managed to see how buttons are made using old machines.

Funny English as it often happens in China, especially the title. But I still like this simplicity and spiritual purity if I can say.

To enter the museum you have to scan your ticket and pass through the turnstile.

To be continued.

Some pictures from Tile museum, it took some 20 minutes to see it around.

I liked the fact that the museum is home to many kinds of tiling including that of ancient and contemporary houses of the well-off.

The shape and images engraved used to show the nobleness of the master.

Here, I was a bit shocked. GOODS FROM RUSSIA as it was inscribed::

I started to fall asleep bit by bit full of new impressions and feelings and due to the fact that I hadn't almost slept at all on the plane

Later, after visiting the museum, we went farther into the Ancient town and got to a small square that led to one of the main canals.

I remembered how the Sun often looks like in China:

And a picture of nature as we moved to the canals:

Let's move on. From now on, I'll post fewer pictures per post.

http://fotki.yandex.ru/users/night-c...m/view/464983/

The central part of the town was built on canals. The water is quite filthy, yet it all looks picturesque.

http://fotki.yandex.ru/users/night-c...m/view/464984/

I especially admire this kind of trees, they seem like they are crying over the water.

http://fotki.yandex.ru/users/night-c...m/view/464985/

As I said before, the houses are not refurbished to keep the spirit of the past:

Either the Chinese is wrong or it's once again sloppy English translation. The middle and right artifacts date from post-empire times (eg. 20th century) per the Chinese description, but in English, they're a few hundred years older from the Ming Dynasty (the 2nd last dynasty).

Very interesting thread. The city is like a set for a period film, almost unbelievable that it's just close to modern Shanghai.
