My trip to Lisbon - Portugal

I was in Lisbon for 3 days over Christmas and I had a really an enjoyable time as the weather was just perfect for the whole time I was there. The only downside was the most places were closed because of the public holiday.

Getting from the airport to downtown was a piece of cake as there is a bus outside the airport which will take you there for 3.50 euros (5$) I stayed in a hostel in Rua Augusta which is one of the main pedestrian areas in Lisbon and very close to the sea, however if you do stay in this street please do not buy anything from the cafes and restaurants that you find there as they will rip you off openly and unashamedly (I was charged 2 euros for an hot chocolate which was made with the instant powder)

Lisbon is an easy city to get around on foot and it's really beautiful as it has a small town feeling even though it's quite a big city. If you don't want to walk you can get on one of the historic trams/streetcars, but beware of number 28 as that is robbery central and it is frequented by experienced pickpockets

It was also interesting to see all the people from the ex Portuguese colonies in Africa (Cape Verde,Angola,Mozambique, etc) who decided to make their home in Lisbon

The economic situation as you know it's terrible at the moment in Portugal and it was quite visible in terms of poor people on the streets (which used to be non existent anywhere in western Europe before the crisis)

What planet were you living on before the crisis?
Poor people on the streets have always existed in every city with a significant population, even in the wealthiest countries.

Certainly not in western Europe. I grew up in Sicily which is certainly not a rich place to grow up and everyone had a roof over the head even during the worst times. You will find that homelessness is a new concept in many European cities (not in major cities though of course where homeless people have always existed)

If you read my previous post I was merely referring to being homeless, I wasn't saying that there aren't poor people in Europe

Honestly, Portugal doesn't look any worse now than it did before, the crisis is nothing new in Portugal, its been ongoing since 1144

Really good photos, Lisbon is a beautiful city

I've lived in Brighton and London for a few years and can testify to that.. Plenty of homeless people in central parts of those cities at a time of economic prosperity for most Brits..

Also, quite rightly you may be annoyed with what what seems like a rip-off, but lets not be naive by not expecting that in highly pedestrianised touristy areas of any city on the planet.

come on, no need to rouse egos here, i'm portuguese and i agree that a great percentage of portuguese are poor, i'm not just talking about the homeless! here, many people have to work 12 hours a day and stiil their refrigerators are empty. my point of view, it's sad to see hard-working people still living in difficultys enough of-topic, nice pics! i havn't been to the capital for some time, maybe more than 2 years

Wonderful pics During public holidays almost everything is closed, it's a bit disappointing, but you have always museums and a lot of places to visit

The trams are very nice away to know the old neighbourhoods, but they are becoming the perfect spot to pickpockets, they are small and most of the time are crowded. I catch the 28 to go to my parents' house, and frequently watch those guys "having fun". Most often it's people's fault, they are careless with their belongings. Although Lisbon is not a dangerous city, you need common sense.
