Thank you too,
Let's go to other places of Lithuania Historical region - Samogitia/Žemaitija Important to know that it was last region in all Europe which adopted Christianity. It was in 1413!! Firstly, smaller town but very important - Kražiai During Grand Duchy of Lithuania times it was one of most important cultural centre in Samogitia. Here was built first church in all this region. - 1416, now left just small ruins and belfry. Burnt during first days of WWII. ![]() Other very important object in town is former Jesuit College. From all 22 buildings complex left only one XVII c. students dormitory. During wars against swedes college church was destroyed and not rebuilt, left only stones. View to college dormitory from first oldest church hill ![]() Come closer ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Stones of former college church ![]() XIX c. view of complex ![]() ![]() Destroyed buildings ![]() miestai.net church ![]() miestai.net |

After 1795, when huge part of Lithuania was occupied by Russia Empire, it was started to close a lot of churches, monasteries some of them was reorganized to ortodox church, but painful that some of them was just demolished.
It was same situation with Kražiai town, tsarist administration decided to demolish this magnificent baroque style Kražiai church. It was in 1893. So what was later.. Local people started defence this church, administration sent special cossack troops against this unarmed people army. Troops with horses inside church killed 9 people. This day was called - Kražiai slaughter. But church survived. ![]() ![]() Church architect - Tomas Žebrauskas. He worked in this town college. Built in 1763. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() View from church to college

Telšiai
Population: About 35000 First metioned in 1450 During the November Uprising in 1831 Telšiai became a sanctuary for Polish–Lithuanian partisans fighting the Russians. During the years of Lithuanian independence, 1918 to 1940, Telšiai grew rapidly. Several girls' and boys' high schools, a crafts school and a teacher's seminary were founded. The Alka museum was built, and several cultural societies were operated. During the first Soviet occupation, as a result of the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact, Telšiai became infamous for the nearby Rainiai massacre, the mass murder of 76 Lithuanian political prisoners perpetrated by the Red Army during the night of June 24–25, 1941. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Symbol of Samogitia is bear ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
