New Wear Bridge | Sunderland, UK | 190m/140m

A new landmark bridge is to be built across the River Wear in Sunderland, UK creating a new link into the centre of the City and a new image for Sunderland. The final name is yet to be decided.

The bridge has been designed by local architect Stephen Spence and at 190m the bridge will be the tallest in England and Wales. The bridge deck is 336m and will carry pedestrians, cyclists and four lanes of traffic.

The bridge is needed to relieve pressure on the 3 other vehicle crossings in the city. It is expected that it will kick-start regeneration of the surrounding areas and the local economy.

Funding and planning has been approved with tenders currently out for the construction. Construction is expect to start before the end of the year and be completed by 2015.

Absolutely superb design this, am so glad they've gone with it and not a generic concrete bridge. Will be seen for miles around and become a real icon for the city.

Its going ahead for sure the government and local authorities are paying and the funding is secured.

The government has given £82.5m funding for it even though there are so many cuts happening. It is such an important project for the city, the total amount the government had to put into national projects was around £650m, and having put £82.5 is a large percentage of that figure showing how important this is. The total cost of the project is expected to be around £133m.

The construction should start later this year for completion in 2015.

What a beautiful design - bridge as aeolian lyre. I'm looking forward to seeing photographs during the construction process, and will plan to visit when it is finished.

Seems that some initial earthworks are taking place at south side of the river and a number of factories seem to have been demolished on old Grove (Coles) Crane site. At the north end of the entrance to the proposed bridge there also seems to be work happening around some of the smaller office units opposite the dental practice! I know they have not appointed a contractor yet so maybe its the council doing preparation work ahead of proper contractor taking charge. Any info would be appreciated!!! But from observations some sort of work has already started on a low scale on both sides of the river!!!
