Facebook HQ: The Hacker Way

Facebook's 'new' headquarters in Menlo Park

After only a year and a half, Facebook has outgrown its offices in Palo Alto, reports TechCrunch. The social networking site will be moving 3.6 miles down the road to Menlo Park. Both locations are in the San Francisco Bay area, also known as Silicon Valley. The new facility, which used to house Sun Microsystems in its heyday, is composed of 11 buildings over 57 acres, with an additional 22 acres of offices connected to the complex by tunnel. It should be able to hold at least 3,700 employees. Facebook currently has about 1,400 employees in its Palo Alto offices and an additional 600 around the world.

Facebook’s staff has been increasing too fast for the Palo Alto office to contain it, says CFO David Ebersman. “We are reaching a point where we won’t be able to fit. Facebook is growing 50% a year in terms of headcount and our growth plan is to continue hiring in the Bay Area.”

Yes, it's the former campus of Sun Microsystems. That's why I put "new" in half quotes. I'm sure there's a lot of people at Facebook that would like an entirely new headquarters designed by them from the ground up...

High Times at Hacker Square

Facebook IPO mints new millionaires aplenty...and a few notable billionaires.

I'm rather glad the latest generation of tech (if you can call it that) companies are re-using space. In July Twitter will move into it's new HQ which is a glorious art deco relic being thoroughly renovated for it on the embarrassment that is San Francisco's mid-Market area (and its presence will begin what everyone hopes is a renaissance of the area).

New Twitter HQ

Among the things renovation will bring is supposedly a roof garden.

I'd buy the Monadnock Building if I was one of them!

Twitter's just renting, though (Shorenstein Properties is the landlord). Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your point of view), even Salesforce.com decided not to own their HQ as you know (I say fortunately because I think it absorbs more of the available office space which will lead to quicker building of something new and highrise).

I agree. There are a lot of great spaces that need a bit of TLC, but would be amazing HQ's.

I also wish the FB campus looked like a "like" button from the aerial shot..
