2020 Olympic bids

Thought it might be interesting to have a thread on this. I've always found the Olympic bid process interesting. Its the ultimate city vs city process.

Currently its at the stage of applicant city, before the IOC selects its shortlisted cities to go on as "candidates".

There are six applications: Madrid, Rome, Istanbul, Baku, Doha and Tokyo.

Watch this space though as the Italian Parliament decides today if the Rome bid will continue, as its not exactly a good look bidding for the Olympics when your country probably couldn't afford to buy a McDonalds francise.

Suprising that Madrids bid is not coming under similar scrutiny from the Spanish.

It will be interesting to see if Baku will make the shortlist - as a start their bid logo is certainly better than Madrid and Tokyo.

Doha I'm sure can afford it, but the IOC will want to distance itself from the FIFA boys club, so I'm doubtful the Olympic elite will want to go near the new money upstart.

Tokyo as a frontrunner. More stable than Europe, although only 8 years after Beijing and only two years after the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea would be a first for Asia in terms of hosting concentration.

Lastly there is Istanbul. I think 2020 is Istanbuls to loose. Their bid is going to be tight and there is a huge sentimental reason to go to Turkey. Istanbul is the border of Asia and Europe and it would be the first Summer Olympics staged in an Islamic city. I'm willing to put my money on Istanbul hosting 2020.

Istanbul would be my choice. Its about time the Olympics were held in some new cities and Turkey is developing very quickly.

I'd love to see the games in Rome, but Istanbul a close second. As said, as long as Doha doesn't get it :collate:

I think Istanbul would have to be a good chance.

When is the decision made?

Tokyo would be 12 years after Beijing, not 8.

Istanbul because it is the crossroads of Asia and Europe as the city is on both continents. Also no Arab nation has hosted an Olympic games.

^probably worth mentioning Turkey is not an Arab country. It's capital is in Europe and the rest is 'culturally' middle eastern with central Asian links.

I would love to see it go to Baku or Istanbul, not really appropriate for either Madrid or Rome to be bidding at all...

A fairly uninspiring list.
Would prefer it to go to a country or city that hasn't had it before, so Istanbul is my first choice.

Did a uni project on istanbul last year and was pleasantly surprised with what the city has going for it. Aside from a modern skyline and efficient metro transit, alot of world conferences are held there including the Eurasia Business and Economics Society conference. Worth noting is that it's a megacity too...

Istanbul is also a seriously beautiful city. I'd say in terms of its natural setting it will be on par with Rio 2016 and Sydney 2000 as being the most beautiful natural locations of an Olympics.

In 2012 there are still people who think Turks are Arabs?

Istanbul is not the capital, it's Ankara and the city is located in Asia.

Seriously guys, are you that isolated from the rest of the world on your big island?

I'm willing to bet there are many people around the world that don't know Ankara is the capital of Turkey. Not just Australians.

FWIW, I knew it was the capital.

I am also willing to bet there are many people who can't read and write..

One Australian guy says Turks are Arabs. Another one is correcting him and tells him its capital Istanbul is in Europe. It's just hilarious.
