Hi all!

Let's start a new thread about Budapest Airport in Hungary.

Terminals:

Terminal 1

- used by low-cost carriers; built from 1940-1950, fully reconstructed and upgraded in 2005; historical monument (architectural modernism). Capacity: about 2,5 million passengers per annum.

- used by legacy carriers; built in 3 stages: T2A, T2B and SkyCourt (inaugurated in 1985, 1998 and 2011 respectively). Capacity: about 10 million passengers a year.

Terminal 2 from airside (photo taken from the Tower).

On the left side there is the SkyCourt and next to it Terminal 2B.

And in front of them, on the apron there is almost the whole Malév Hungarian Airlines fleet - grounded as the company ceased it's operations. They flew to Shannon to the lessor's base, several hours later as the picture was taken.

After the bankruptcy of Malév, several immediate new routes were announced, as following:

BERLIN (TXL) - new Air Berlin (1 daily) and Lufthansa (1 daily) flight from 6th of February

BRUSSELS (BRU) - one extra flight on weekdays, operated by Brussels Airlines from 13th of February

BUCHAREST (OTP) - one new daily flight operated by Tarom from 6th of February

HAMBURG (HAM) - new Lufthansa (1 daily) flight from 6th of February, possibly 2 daily from the summer schedule.

Ryanair also announced that it would base 4 aircraft and serve 31 destinations gradually building up its services from February till July.

Wow Ryanair were kick to fill the void before Malev were even cold in the grave, guess this a new expansion method for them, wait for legacy carriers to fail (as many will) then use their huge fleets to jump in there before a replacement airline can begin.

Will they operate the new routes from T2 or T1?

It's so sad having to witness National carriers cease to exist and be taken over by 'budget' low-cost carriers...

Ryanair will be operating from T2 and not T1 as planned. They will be using check in hall B.

Isn't T2 maxed out capacity wise? Wizz Air got about 2M pax, plus other LC and charter flights..

Ryanair will now base 5 aircraft at BUD and add Tampree as well as increasing a number of routes. (manily ones served by Wizz Air)

I know what you mean. We have the same type of thing in Belgrade. The capacity is 7.5M, and we are at just at 3.1M.

Well, T1 can handle about 2,5 million pax per year, T2 with the reconstruction and the addition of SkyCourt can handle around 10-10,5 million.

In 2011, with all the low-cost carriers at T1 there was around 2,3 milion pax. In T2 there was around 6,6 million pax (together with the Malév passengers of about 3,2 million). Now, after Malév's grounding there is a lot of capacity in T2.

Even if Ryanair will take T2, and some new airlines, new routes or capacity increases will come to that Terminal, there will be enough space to handle that.

Good stuff! I am just suprised that T2 can handle 10M a year. I am not the expert, but it looks as if there is only 12-13 jetways for 10M figure. The sky court is moreover of a facelift of the T2. In the pictures, it clearly shows shops and food court, but there isn't a single jetway attached to the new skycourt. It looks as if it was built to offer more relaxed transit zone rather than increasing the capacity. Than again, if they managed to increase the capacity by constructing the skycourt, that was a very clever idea.

I wonder who will fill the direct route BUD-JFK from the autumn after Malev bankruptcy? It would be pitty to eliminate this route for good, especially for the business people but also for the DV winners and for the people who have relatives in USA.

Actually there's really only 12 in use if i'm correct out if the original 14.
But there are much more aircraft stands on the enlarged apron, so there's no capacity problem from this side.

SkyCourt was much more than "facelift": the airport destroyed a large part of Terminal 2A and 2B, and built a completely new building between them – that's the SkyCourt. It is a separate structure, although connected to both terminal buildings. And it has around 24 000 sq.m. in gross surface in 4 floors. So that is not only a minor change.

Facelift takes place now in the inside of T2A, the older building, at the gates' area.

They arranged a central security zone in SkyCourt, with more lanes as earlier in the separate security zones of T2A/B, and the spacious departures hall of the SkyCourt gives also more area for passengers. The transit areas are now well connected through this new building, much more working together as a single terminal. The A is for schengen-flights, the B is for non-schengen traffic with passport control zone in the border of SkyCourt and the B-gates area.

So there is where the added capacity comes.
