The city is one of the smallest capitals in the world and is home to over one third of the country's population (~ 130,000) Area: 5.8 km 2 (2.2 sq mi). In recent years, the island has been considerably expanded through landfilling operations. The Island of Malé is the second most densely populated island worldwide, the built-up area taking up essentially its entire landmass. The name Male was taken from the Sanskrit word "mahaalay", meaning "big house". Male is a conservative Muslim city. Maldives is an island nation in the Indian Ocean formed by a double chain of twenty-six atolls. It stands in the Laccadive Sea , about 700 kilometres (430 mi) south-west of Sri Lanka and 400 kilometres (250 mi) south-west of India. The Maldives is the smallest Asian country in both population and land area. With an average ground level of 1.5 metres (4 ft 11 in) above sea level, it is the planet's lowest country. It is also the country with the lowest highest point in the world, at 2.3 metres. Life expectancy at birth stood at 46 years in 1978, and later now rose to 74. Infant mortality has declined from 127 per thousand in 1977 to 28 per thousand today, and adult literacy reached 96%. As of April 2008, more than 70,000 foreign employees lived in the country and another 33,000 illegal immigrants comprised more than one third of Maldivian population.
