That's cool, it seems like all you really need in Male is a bicycle unless I'm mistaken by the size of the island.

The size of Malé atoll is 5.789 km2 (2.2351 sq mi) and it had a total of 60 Km of paved roads. The population is almost 104.000 inhabitants, with a density of around 18.000 abitants/km2. Yes the bicycle could be enough, but a scooter or moto is used by larger part of the population. The car is considerated a status symbol in Malé, just elite class has one.

The advantages of a car in the Maldives is that it has airconditioning, a roof and it's much safer. In developed countries, the fatality rate of mopeds/scooters is typically 20 times that of a car (not to mention motorcycle, which can be 40 times more dangerous).

Clear downsides are the much higher cost, lack of parking and you can never drive more than 50 km/h or a few kilometers.

I think I would own a scooter there. But if islands are a bit larger the number of motor vehicles increases pretty quickly. For instance the ownership rate of motor vehicles in Malta is one of the highest in Europe (Iceland too).

Actually the speed limit in Malé is 25 Km/h (15 mph). I read that for to walk across the island, you need more or less 30 minutes. There are no buses on the island. No VAT in Maldives

Must be one of the most urbanised islands in the world (excluding the likes of Manhattan or Portsea which are connected by multiple bridges and very thin canals), any other obvious similar examples?

According to Wikipedia, Malé is the second most densely island populated in the world after Ap Lei Chu in Hong Kong and the 168th most populated island in the world.

I just measured Male's size on Google Earth: 2 km x 1.5 km...so it's 4 or 5 sqkm large.

Why do people purchase cars???

Status symbol could be the only reason to do that. Personally I would move around the town with a bike.

Interestingly the airport of Malé is not connected to the city by road or any other form of land transport. You need to use a ferry.

Everyone cope with inclement weather in the world, who more, who less than the average troubles.

They have heavy rains, especially from May onwards until October: it all depends if, when it rains, it does all day long or only with short but heavy showers!

Yes right. But there's another thing that I find Interesting: Hulhumalé. It's a is a reclaimed island located in the North Male Atoll, reclaimed to establish a new land mass required to meet the existing and future housing, industrial and commercial development demands of the Malé region, linked by a road to the existing hulhulé atoll where the airport is located. The official settlement was inaugurated on May 12, 2004.
The development of Hulhumalé known as Phase I was formed under the first Master Plan which was completed in July 2001 by a consortium of consultants from Singapore with the contribution of many government agencies, committees and individuals. It conceptually defines the long-term land use and development strategy (including urban design proposals, transportation plans and utility infrastructure) with considerations for future infrastructure connections to the adjacent Phase II and planned airport extension areas.

Phase I of this Master plan includes:
Stage 1A (completed)
A 280 room apartment complex with a combination of 2,3 and 4 bedroom units
An integrated primary and secondary school housing 20 classrooms
A public building for government and social requirements containing 32 units
A Hospital with 50 bed capacity
A Mosque for 1500 persons
Four commercial buildings with a total of 48 units
An Asphalt-paved road network approximately 12.5 km long
An adequate land space for the cultivation of indigenous plants and imported varieties

Stage 1B (Completed)
232 Condominium housing units
120 Basic housing units
169 Beach plots
56 Standard plots,
132 Terraced houses
280 Housing units
57 Residential beach front plots
109 Residential beach plots
56 Residential standard plots.
132 Plots for terraced housing
A public building with 32 public units
15 Industrial and commercial land plots with an average of 1,000 m2 per unit

Stage 1C (completed)
1900 Housing units

Stage 2 (targeted for 2016)
2950 Housing units

Stage 3 (targeted for 2020)
3075 Housing units

Here an aerial view of Hulhumalé

Yes right. Besides taxis (in the pics your recognize them by yellow license plate), usually cars are purchased by elite class. In an island with 25 km/h of speed limit you can spot cars like this. If it's not exhibitionism....
