No, I don't ... Sadly. Because I didn't realize that the cars was there when I took the picture. I only noticed it later when I looked at it at home.

First verision of the Volvo 140. 1967-1971. I think this is a 1970 model

Also notice the yellow "hazard" lights under the bumper. These were a substitute for the dipped headlights at day when this law came in 1977.

A question for Mercedes buffs: what is the relationship between the letter+three number codes (such as W116) and the letter-series designation more commonly used (C-series, S-series, etc.).

Code W116 is the project code (chassis code) while C-series is the name used to be sell. BMW has the same codes (for example E21 is the 3-series 1975-1983)

Yes but what is the logic behind the letter-three number codes such as W116, and specifically what I meant to ask as well was the three number + letter code used for public sales and put on the trunk lid, such as 190E for the W201 for instance.

Because until Wikipedia made these codes available to me, I always referred to Mercedes by their series letter + three-digit number. I had never heard of the "W" codes.

So for instance why didn't Mercedes put W126 on the 560 SEL sedan of the 80's, instead of putting this other, confusing designation 560 SEL???

That is why I have a lot of trouble understanding the official W numbers, because I had always known the Mercedes from their trunk lid codes.. so the E 200 is the W124... Jesus.

Besides, the W codes make no sense, the W123 goes logically to W124 but then W210 (at least the 100s go to the 200s)...

1980 Volvo 245. This picture is taken in 1980 so the car was brand new.

The photo is from an old dusty slide belonging to a (deceased) relative of mine.

Can someone see what the hotel sign is saying ?

MB 230 1978

My 1978 MB 230. I was a very proud owner of this car. Bought it in 1993 for 1100 euro.
The picture is taken south of Stockholm along the E4. This diner is gone now and replaced by McDonalds.

MB 230 1978

This MB had some issues with the engine, it sounded like a diesel. I sold it about 2 years later and
I checked the auto register found out that the license nr BZW 980 was canceled in 1998.
This car is scrap today.

Because they mean different thing. W126 = the chassis. Like with Bmw and their e-codes.

560 SEL = that particularly trim. 560SEL means 5,6 liter engine, S-class, Excutive trim and Long wheelbase version.
You could also a get W126-chassis as a 420 SEC (4.2 liter engine, Coupe) or 500 SEL (5.0 liter engine, long wheelbase) or many other similarly named versions.

The numbers don't have any relationships with actual engine size on the newer models though and they mainly keep the numbers as a nod to the models of yore.

Actually You're a bit wrong with this SEL. S for Sonderclasse (special class - both saloons and coupes), E for einspritzung (fuel injection in german), L for lang radstand (long wheel base). Now things with MB model designations are not that simple, but in the past it was rather clear. Three digits for engine capacity, E for injected petrol engines, D for diesel, S for S-class models, C for coupes*, T for estates, SL/SLC for sporty light (sport leicht) roadsters/convertibles/coupes. For example the white W116 I've posted is 2,8 carburattor engine S-class (280S), the black one is 2,8 litre injected S-class (280SE), the brown W123 is 2,3 litre injection (230E), the green is 2,4 litre diesel (240D) and the dark green estate had 240TD designation in the back (2,4 litre diesel estate). With W201 things got slightly more complicated, as it was always 190 with additinal letter (D or E - diesel or injected petrol) and with certaind engines displacement designation (e.g. 190D 2,5). About that Wxxx stuff I think that only logical explanation for W124 beeing replaced by W210 (instead of W125) etc. is that only some projects come to production.

* C was for coupes from certain moment, earlier the had designations simmilar to saloons like this 2,8 litre injected coupe:

But:

S-class is short for Sonderklasse in the first place, hence the S is short for S-class which again is short for Sonderklasse. I'm not wrong there, you just go further into the details.
