Clock tower restoration. The article states they are using traditional materials and that it will be 23 meters tall.

I know this thread is about Gdansk but wow I love that photo of Madrid, one of the world's great cities and thankfully not as touristy as Barcelona but just as good if not better.

Some nice examples of 19th Century architecture in Poland...

Wroclaw

Lodz

Is there any 19-20th Century street in Gdansk which survived the war or has been rebuilt after WW2?

OT: Soon we all shall be witnesses of the reconstruction of a
medieval ship - carrack „Peter von Danzig” ("Piotr z Gdanska")- organized by The Archaeological Museum in Gdańsk

This wooden ship was even larger than amazing Swedish Vasa ship.

It is truly heatwarming to see this kind of architectural work going on today. Those that bang on about it being fake and pastiche are completely missing the point. It puts London..and Britain in general, to shame when you think of what could have been restored after the war. But all we got were tawdry office blocks, ring roads and multi story car parks. If Gdansk is backward thinking - I know which way i'd rather go.

I don't know too much about Gdańsk but XIX century architecture was considered rather wortless at that time (40-70) not old enough and in bad taste so I don't think any building from this period was reconstructed from scratch like the Old Town of Warsaw, in fact many of them were demolished for roads and new modernist housing much like in the West at that time. Those that survived often serve as a social housing for the poorest. It's better with early XX century buildings, although there were still quite young after the war there wasn't much need for reconstruction since they survived in quite good condition due to stronger construction and some other factors.
