This reconstruction is absolutely splendid with the reconstruction being even more ornate and whimsical than its predecessor. |

The term "fake" is that trotted out by incompetent contemporary architects frustrated that they cannot come up with anything nearly so beautiful or timeless. It's actually quite passe now as people have realized it's only their terminology that is "fake".

brawo and well said, time to revise or tear up Venice Charter. we can all dispense with any delusion that modern or contemporary architecture can create the kind of warm and rich atmosphere that historic buildings pre-Bauhaus could. it's about cost though, those old grande dames cost a fortune to build and maintain, developers would rather put up a reinforced concrete skeleton and just slap on a curtain wall.

People's reactions here are so predictable. I am no fan of modernism in general. However, I am no fan of large scale reconstruction and historicism either. We don't need to "correct" history. We can't. Classical buildings reflect a certain period in history, and a certain way things were done etc. Now I do support partial reconstruction in some cases, especially of buildings of mportance or real aesthetic value. Maybe I even support the reconstruction of Gdansk. However not to admit that there are certain problems involved in such a process is downright stupid.

Im all up for whole-sale reconstructions as long as they are honest and not trying to make a statement. Yes, Gdansk does look nice and Id rather have what is there now than some Communist concrete hell-hole. However the reconstruction of Gdansk was a political move where German influences where ignored ("Prussian Barbarism") and Flemish ephasised.

It's hard to understand what do you mean because you just served a few empty words. What books have to do with that? I've read a lot and still don't understand you.

@RS_UK-PL - probably not, but church in this photo is currently under renovation and partial reconstruction.
Btw. Near this church, there is last(abou 2 years ago) house reconstruction known to me, which looks a bit crappy in my opinion: theese 2 houses(pre WW2): ![]() only one wall survived(in middle): ![]() and after reconstruction: That survived fragment sticking out of the building shows us that, propably these 2 building weren't so straight like now...
