So would I. I love what they've done in Berlin in many places, but for example the reconstructions I saw in Frankfurt and Riga were awful.

One positive thing about the so devestating modernization of British cities after WWII, and that so little was reconstructed is that everything old you see today is more or less original.

Uphagen haus is one example of full reconstruction(including interiors), but first little story about this haus, it was built at end of XVII century, the last owner of this haus had a wish to his successors, to not changing interior, so in this shape building survived to 1945, but in 1944 interior was evacuated and come back in 1990's(sic!)

And Uphagen haus is also special reconstruction, because it includes reconstuction of outbuilding, in 99% cases outbuildings weren't reconstructed due to ideological reasons(it was place where mostly lived poor people, service etc.), you can see it clearly in google earth:

Probably because it was too Prussian.

Like in Breslau, the local government wanted to reconstruct the destroyed buildings, if it didn't remind to much of Prussia....

It was ugly anyway, not that the new one is pretty...

In some cases yes, but that is very different from complete reconstruction. Facadism (death masking) seems to be popular in Britain though.

I agree. Also, they should plant some trees in this area. Unfortunately, this is another street which lost its charm after reconstruction.

Are there also any buildings which were 'known' or 'well known' in Gdańsk/Dantzig which they didn't rebuild? Like churches, houses, palaces, gates and so on

As far as I know, there are still some reconstruction works going on in the Marian Cathedral and the other church (St John the Baptist?) isn't full rebuilt / is in an unfinished state and the "Stare Przedmiescie" or "Old Suburb" district was bisected by a major road and populated with post-war commie blocks. Not much there except a monastery and some churches, which were rebuilt. Otherwise, the vernacular every day architecture was lost.

Some work has been done on reconstructing and engaging the Granary Islands but I'm not sure where that is in the process.

That's as much as I understand from my passing glaces at the various Gdansk threads.

Still going on there

Gdańsk, Warsaw and Dresden are good examples for Kaliningrad if they're going to rebuild the Kneiphof and the Castle......Hope they'll reconstruct that very soon too
