Danzig/Gdansk road plans from 1930´s

Plans from 1930´s to remodel the inner city road network (more car friendly city, look kind of similar to the road network that can be found today in Gdansk)

Was pre-war Tobiasz street - Tobiasgasse located at the other side of the church then now?

It looks otherwise in my opinion:

Agree, I have already mentioned that a faithful reconstruction of the missing "Fish-market" buildings along with the restitution of the permanent outdoor fishmarket in the tourist season would be a great addition to this city which is famous for being the most important port city in the Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth.

Wouldn´t this be great? (fresh fish right from the Baltic sea)

Andrzej Januszajtis, one of the most determined citizens of Gdansk demanding further reconstruction of this lost city

http://bi.gazeta.pl/im/7/5666/z56661...anuszajtis.jpg

Some of his suggestions and accomplishments are:
- Reconstruction of gothic and renaissance clocks on several of Gdansk´s churches and structures.
- Argues for interior reconstructions in several of Gdansk´s gothic and baroque churches (among them "The royal chapel" built by Jan III Sobieski and "St.John´s church")
- Fights for reconstruction of facades of the former Granaries at the "Granary islands"
- Fights for reconstruction of several town houses and entire streets in Gdansk´s Main town and Old town.
- Keeps the memory of pre-war Gdansk/Danzig alive

Here you can see how little of Gdansk´s old town has been rebuilt after 1945.

As we all know, due to the large German-speaking community in former Gdansk/Danzig, the city became Protestant during Reformation. Please see below one of the churches built by Catholic community in Gdansk.

Baroque St. Ignatius Loyola's Church in Gdansk (built in 1747-1755, originally founded by bishop Hieronim Rozrażewski)

* recently renovated

Another example of Baroque architecture is for instance well known Catholic Royal Chapel (built in 1678-1681)...

Interesting article (PL): http://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tumult_...4ski_1525-1526

PS. Actually, I cannot find any church built by Protestants in Gdansk before partitions of Poland. Do you know if Protestant community built any church in Gdansk before 1793? Maybe there was some Polish law to prohibit Protestants to built churches (that's why Protestants were emigrating to Duchy of Prussia).

Gdansk Day in Vilnius

We have to remember that probably without people from Wilno/Vilnius, Main Town in Gdansk would not have been so beautifully rebuilt.

Displaced Poles from Wilno/Vilnius region formed the largest group in the post-war Gdańsk. In 1948, only 15,205 people (9.1% of total population) were former Polish Danzigers. Btw, the number of Poles in the city before WW2 was about 30-36 thousand (many lost their lives under the Nazi regime).

Certified copy of 1677 Gdansk Treaty handed over to Wilanow Palace Museum

On 5 October (2012), MFA Undersecretary of State Bogusław Winid handed over an original certified copy of a secret 17th-century treaty to Paweł Jaskanis, Director of the Wilanow Palace Museum.

The historical document, known as the Gdansk Treaty, was concluded on 4 August 1677 between Poland’s King John III Sobieski and the Swedish monarch Charles XI. The copy of the document was presented as a gift to the Museum by the New York-based Bloch Family Foundation.

The Gdansk Treaty played a key role in the foreign policy of the Polish sovereign during the first years of his reign. The Treaty targeted the Elector of Brandenburg, with whom the King of Sweden Charles XI fought a war for control over Western Pomerania. Under the Treaty, in exchange for Polish consent for Charles’ army to march from Livonia through Royal Prussia, Sweden agreed to grant the Duchy of Prussia to King Sobieski for his son Jakub. Until now, Polish archives held just one original copy of the Treaty, located in the Czartoryski Library in Krakow. The original Treaty, which comes from the Radziwiłł Archives, is being kept in the Central Archives of Historical Records in Warsaw.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs sincerely wishes to thank the Bloch Family Foundation for the care and protection it has afforded to Polish cultural and historical heritage items scattered across the globe, and for its numerous donations to Polish museums.
