That wasn't the intent of my comment - but under communism, obviously if there was a "good fit" between a reconstruction and a communist ideal, it made "the cut" despite the cost. In the context of investment, investors and profit margins, it makes little sense for people to reconstruct when they can commission someone that puts their imprint on a particular space.

This area (the Northern end of Wyspa Spichrzów [=Granary Island], the former site of Gdańsk granaries, some remembering the times when the city was a Kuwait of grain export) had bad luck with a series of developers who could not find the money to build or simply went bankrupt (including a Spanish developer who acquired it just before the Spanish property crash).

But yes, it is a prime site and sooner or later it will be developed.

I have to say that I really like this renovation (especially the following quote: "Sapientissime fiunt quae pro Republica fiunt"). Most of photographs in my posts are few years old and this is just a recent renovation (2010-2011). Can you please tell me if the LOT building still standing? Will we see any more reconstructions in Highland Gate (Brama Wyzynna) area?

It is still standing even as it seems doomed. Last year local papers reported plans for its demolition, possibly making place for a hotel.

Other reconstructions in the area? Zbrojownia (The Armory) nearby has seen similar care about details during its recent repair works.

The area on the other side of the main street from the gate is supposed to be developed soon. There is an ongoing debate about the plans the developers unveiled and a market place (Gildia) has been recently closed to make place for the building site.

The monument has changed. Of course ;-)

It is now King Sobieski, repatriated after the war from Lwów (now Lviv in Ukraine).



PS. The house with the cupola is the former house of Danzig Research Society (as it is called in English on Wikipedia)

Do you have any post-war pics of gothic kamienica, would like to see if any original elements were incorporated.
