Worcester and Ledbury, England UK

Here is a trip i took to Worcester, a cathedral city on the border with Wales. As usual i saw a sign for Ledbury on the way to Worcester, never heared of it, stopped and loved the place, typically UK!

Ledbury in the east of the county, is one of England's text book market towns, full of prime examples of timber-framed buildings. The 17th century black & white Market House, which had originally served as a grain store dominates the town centre, and is supported on pillars of chestnut.it was completed in 1653 by John Abel, the Kings carpenter, another fine example of black & white architecture is The Feather's Hotel on the High Street.

Church Lane is a much photographed cobbled medieval street containing the Heritage centre, Butchers Row Folk Museum and the Painted Room leading to a fine Parish Church.

Indeed. I do like those timber-framed buildings. However the shopfronts are terrible as is the traffic. I think in places like these it should be illegal to have tacky shopfronts (Boots and Priory Cleaners). This would do wonders to said towns appearance.

I thought the same while watching the pictures.

A wonderful place, I´ve benn several times in the Cotswolds and the whole area in the border with Wales is very beatiful with nice old English charm.

Thanks both. Unfortunately these are living breathing towns and not architectural museums, so change in basic things like signs is down to the shop owners and long term council planning. As for the road, it is the heart of the town, without it i doubt it would be so busy.

Without wanting to drag this thread off-topic - yes they are, but that doesnt mean their appearance cannot be improved by removing the clutter, paving the streets in stones, putting car park(s) somewhere out of view and making shopowners to get proper shopfronts - if you look to the left in the first photo in post #11 youll see very nice shopfronts. Anyway, carry on.

Thanks everyone, i'd like to live somewhere like this when i retire SO143. It sounds funny but seeing 2 butchers on one high street shows that it is a thriving town.
