Another hilarious quote. Somebody condemning Las Vegas for being tacky when her city's tourism is driven by people flying into Minneapolis to go to a shopping mall which isn't even in the city limits.

Is jbkayaker12 secretly milquetoast in disguise? Or does the LAS area just attract morons with delusions of grandeur in Southeastern Nevada?

Commencing eye roll sequence. Yes, exactly. The Twin Cities' entire economy is built around the mighty Mall of America. We need Nordstrom and Sears and Macy's to survive! Vive le Mall. All hail the Mall.

You're making a comparison between a major American financial and business center that is nowhere even close to tourism dependent....and Las Vegas? You really stuck it to us, Ichiban.

Trashy cities attract trashy people. Las Vegas is among the most overrated cities in the US.

And you enjoy living in that trashy, one trick pony, sh!thole in the desert. Btw, you must leave in the suburbs because all the crap you talked about how safe Vegas is is apparently b.s! According to a 2010 Las Vegas Sun article, 3 of the 10 most dangerous neighborhoods in America were in Vegas, lol.

Well if you consider car theft more dangerous than murder, i guess you have a point. The truth is Las Vegas is in no way comparable to cities like Detroit, St. Louis, New Orleans, or even Chicago when it comes to being dangerous. Even our worst ghettos would not seem so bad in those cities.

I think it is ridiculous calling jbkayaker12 a troll when he is being attacked from every direction by those who know nothing about Vegas except for a few casinos they've seen on TV. Are some of the casinos tacky? Absolutely! Is the Strip a tourist trap? Of course! Do you even know we have a real downtown? Probably not. Labeling the entire city a tacky shithole is just DUMB!!! And calling the 2 million residents of Las Vegas trashy, oh yeah that's real classy. This forum is a joke!

Las Vegas is one of the realest cities in this country. It has a unique and vibrant urban core that every other city wants to emulate in some way. Yes it's over the top and we do love our neon lights, but there is so much more to this city. And it doesn't matter how many casinos you build or entertainment districts you create, you cannot replicate the Vegas vibe. You can call it tacky and trashy or whatever because of a few casino facades, it just shows your ignorance. Facades come and go, but the spirit of this city and its people will endure.

Well at least you are being honest in admitting that Las Vegas is a tourist trap and is tacky (which jbkayaker12 did not even admit, hence the amount of riducule he recieved). Anyways you can arguably say that the fact that Las Vegas is tacky is the "main" reason why it is a tourist attraction in the first place.

Las Vegas was famous long before most of the places considered tacky were built. Unless you think Fremont Street and the original Flamingo were tacky. It became famous mainly because of gambling and it's live and let live attitude. Not to mention the entire golden age of Las Vegas. Today it's famous because it's the party capital of the world.

When I refer to tacky, I'm talking Excalibur, Circus Circus, Treasure Island, the Eiffel Tower, the Sphinx in front of the Luxor. Most of these places were built in the early to mid 90's and are just one part of our evolution. What about all the classy hotels since then such as Bellagio, Wynn, Palazzo, City Center, Cosmopolitan, etc? I would say Vegas has definitely moved away from building tacky things.

I don't get where all the hate is coming from. I know it's called Sin City, but was everyone on this forum born in the 90's or are you just all around ignorant???

Well determining what is tacky to some people is a matter of personal taste, to some cities such as Cancun and Dubai are incredibly tacky as well because they have large malls, large themed hotels just like the ones found in Las Vegas, artificial islands, etc. Anyways that has not stopped all of those cities from attracting tourists and some people are indeed attracted to those things, just like some people are repulsed by them. Bottomline you can't really expect everyone to like a place.

I think most reasonable people here realize that Las Vegas is a real working city (after all, all of the casino/hotel workers have to live somewhere right?) but at the same time alot of people are probably put off by the "resort" style atmosphere of places such as the Strip which is why there have been so many negative responses here.

Best fucking post of this thread by a mile.

Re: where is all the hate coming from. Well this is skyscrapercity where you'll run across the urbanphiles who detest anything that isn't like NYC. That's completely understandable and I don't begrudge anybody for not liking the suburban layout of Las Vegas. However instead of attacking the layout of the city we got the "OMGZ...Los Vegez is tacky...it's only for tourists blah blah blah."

It's jealousy, pure and simple, and I won't be convinced otherwise. In my lifetime Las Vegas has been growing as a city while many others have been decaying or maintaining their status quo as an uninteresting place. When I was a kid Las Vegas was obviously known as the gambling capitol of the US. Despite whatever nonsense naysayers are saying, Las Vegas has grown. New elegant superresorts, fine dining options, upscale nightclubs, Vegas has become a worldwide destination.

By the way, you know what I find tacky: rampant poverty, heavily segregated neighborhoods, boarded-up houses, and a complete sense of hopelessness in the community. But as long as a choo-choo is running through the neighborhood I guess that is enough for some.

We're not jealous. We're not uninformed or ignorant. Vegas is what it is: an entertainment city. Chicago is a business city.

Please close this idiotic thread.

You're right, Ichiban. All of us who have perfectly valid criticisms of Las Vegas are simply jealous!

Are you a cast member of the Real Housewives of Las Vegas?

No, I auditioned for the show but the producers told me I was too big of a bitch.

Are you a fat girl named Jennifer or does Jennifat mean something else?
