Skopje Airport maintains lead over Ljubljana

Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport recorded its fourth consecutive month of declining passenger numbers, while its busier counterpart in Skopje continued to see its figures improve, although its growth expectedly slowed in July.

Ljubljana Airport handled 163.267 travellers during the month, a decrease of 5% compared to July of last year. The figure was accompanied by a 6% decline in aircraft movements, which stood at 3.214. The softer results are attributed to Adria Airways, while foreign carriers saw their passenger figures improve 17.4% during the month. Over the January - July period, Ljubljana Airport welcomed 761.538 travellers through its doors, a decrease of 4.6%. Movements were down 3.2% during the seven months, standing at 18.320. In a statement, the airport said that the numbers come as a result of Adria's network cuts and security fears across Europe and popular summer destinations such as Turkey, Egypt and Tunisia.

The Chairman of the Executive Board of Ljubljana Airport's operator Fraport, Stefan Schulte, says the group has downgraded its passenger forecast for 2016. "As a result of geopolitical circumstances, traffic at some airports has significantly decreased. Despite the difficult environment, the group has achieved solid results overall", Mr Schulte said. Airports which have seen a decline in passenger numbers within the Fraport group include Frankfurt, Antalya, St. Petersburg and Hannover, in addition to Ljubljana. Ljubljana Airport's General Manager, Zmago Skobir, previously said, "We expect a slower growth rate to that of last year and we would like to close at 1.5 million passengers. That will be heavily influenced by how Adria Airways' new owners manage the airline. Air traffic growth is forecast to be moderate, but stable. At the same time, changes in the traffic structure are expected to go in favour of an increased share of foreign air carriers".

On the other hand, Skopje Alexander the Great Airport registered its busiest July on record. The airport handled 173.715 passengers during the month, an increase of 5.7% compared to last year. The figure is somewhat lower than the growth rates seen over the past year, however, the airport recorded only a 1% increase in capacity during the month. Overall this year, Skopje Airport welcomed 931.565 travellers through its doors, up 20.5%. Meanwhile, Macedonia's second international airport, Ohrid, welcomed 25.832 passengers in July, up 20.3%. So far this year it handled 75.776 travellers, up 76.2%. Combined, the two recorded 9.609 take offs and landings, an increase of 13.4% on last year.

Serbia outlines Belgrade concession plans

The Serbian government has outlined some of its planned concession conditions for Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport, with the future operator required to invest at least 700 million euros. Presenting his new government's program in parliament this week, the Serbian Prime Minister, Aleksandar Vučić, said, "What used to have a total value of fifty million euros is now valued at 310 million euros thanks to Air Serbia. The plan is to offer a 25-year concession contract through a tender procedure". While a formal decision is yet to be made on whether the airport will be fully privatised or put up for concession, Mr Vučić said the latter is "almost certain", noting that the process will be completed by mid-2017.

Speaking in parliament, Mr Vučić said, "The 25-year concession agreement with an up-front payment will have a starting value of 310 million euros and an additional annual concession fee of ten, eleven or twelve million euros, which will be paid throughout the term of the concession. By mid-2017, the government plans to bring in a long-term partner for Belgrade Airport, which will be responsible for the its long-term development strategy including management, maintenance, financing and capacity expansion". So far, within the former Yugoslavia, Zagreb, Pristina, Skopje and Ohrid airports have been given up for concession, while Ljubljana, Maribor and Portorož airports have been fully privatised.

Eight foreign companies are believed to be interested in taking part in Belgrade Airport's privatisation process. According to a recent report in the "Večernje novosti" daily, Germany's Fraport, France's Vinci and Bouygues, as well as two companies from the United Arab Emirates and three from China have expressed interest in participating in a potential concession. Commenting on its interest in Belgrade, Fraport, which operates the airport in Ljubljana, said, "Fraport is a leading airport management company that successfully operates on four continents worldwide. We are continuously scanning the global market for potential opportunities - with the goal of expanding our international portfolio of airports and consulting activities". Belgrade Airport handled 4.77 million passengers last year and posted a net profit of 26 million euros.

Growth keeps getting crazier and crazier... if it wasn't for Lufhansa's strike, it would have been above 50%.

Varna airport has the potential to become the second busiest airport in Bulgaria and one of the biggest in the Balkans. By 2020, I predict it will pass Burgas and will have over 3M passengers.

Wizz Air will open its 27th base in Varna.

Quote:
Wizz Air today announced that it will open its 27th base on 21 July 2017 in Varna, Bulgaria, with one new Airbus A320 aircraft.
Already served by Wizz Air flights, Varna will be Wizz Air’s second Bulgarian airport with base operations.
The base establishment represents an investment of $98 million by the airline in Varna, creating 36 direct jobs with the airline. The base operations will also contribute to the local economy, supporting jobs in the aviation, transportation, hospitality and tourism industries.
The new aircraft will increase the number of routes served from Varna to seven. The newest Wizz Air services will connect Varna with Dortmund and Munich Memmingen in Germany, Eindhoven in The Netherlands, Larnaca in Cyprus and Milan Bergamo in Italy. The frequency of the popular London Luton service will also increase to 10 weekly flights. In 2017, Wizz Air will have over 380,000 seats on sale on its Varna routes, representing a 260% growth year over year.
