Has Ostankino Tower actually overtaken the CN Tower as the tallest freestanding structure in the world? If so, that is news to me...

I didn't "miss" it. I just posted a selection of a few towers, that's all.

Well, all of them are hideous as shit - so I guess it comes down to which one is the least hideous.

I'm not alone...

The reality that they all look best when viewed from a distance is testament to that fact.

The only one of these types of 'stick towers' that I don't mind is the Space needle in Seattle. It fits in nicely with the skyline and is not an overpowering height thief like most of them.

...anyway thats just my opinion, carry on.

It's the concrete that may make them look a little un-attractive. The CN Tower is one of my all time favorite towers.

But could someone tell me what is going on in this picture? And have they fixed it?

Yes that is a major flaw of the CN Tower. Not sure what exactly causes it but since I have been down it has been fixed. Some of it is still there but not that noticable.

Here is a more recent pic taken by AndyLane78 of Flickr

CN Tower is just awful up close. From a distance, it's iconic. I vote for the Stratosphere (the only one I've actually been in) because of the aesthetics of it. It's cleaner, more modern.
