No it's not the reason. I don't know why people continue to believe this nonsense. University of Cambridge study.

Not only that, but the bedrock in the "valley" is actually the deepest in Manhattan (at least, deeper than most of midtown), which kind of negates the myth that the ground wasn't suitable for larger buildings.
In any case, it's also true that the other myth floating around - that the deep bedrock made construction too expensive - is also a bit off.

In the end, it was zoning and (most importantly) developers wanted to be as close to commuter connections as possible.
Downtown lost out to midtown primarily because commuters weren't solely coming from Brooklyn anymore; they were coming from the other side of the Hudson, further out on Long Island, and the counties north of NYC. These rail links brought them to Grand Central (funnily, this is also something people forget to bear in mind when they talk about Penn Station...).

They changing the zone in Brooklyn 15/20 years ago. I've ask developer why they don't build skyscraper in Brooklyn, & they say bedrock. So guess who I'm going to believe.

That would explain why there are no skyscrapers being built in Brooklyn then. Oh wait...

It has nothing to do with bedrock.

If you're asking why there weren't many skyscrapers being built in Brooklyn from the 1940's to about 1990 or so, it's because there wasn't much demand, and the zoning generally prevented skyscrapers.
