As @ Smille77 suggested we can make a thread of the New Bacolod Airport...so that we can update everyone here about the progress of the ongoing construction and the future operation. Now here's done. Post folks away!

Outstanding. I was wondering about this why the New Bacolod airport did not have it's own thread like Iloilo! Good effort. Pero napansin ko it's supposed to get done in SEPT 2007. Kaya ba iyan!!!

Silay Airport 86% complete
By Erwin Ambo S. Delilan THE construction of New Bacolod (Silay) Airport in Bagtic, Silay City is now 86 percent complete, Transportation and Communication Assistant Secretary Ricardo "Cano" Tan said Monday. In a phone interview, Tan said the Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC), the Provincial Government of Negros Occidental and the Silay City Government are now preparing for the soft opening of the airport next month. President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will be the invited guest, Tan said. As of Monday, Tan said both the 2000-meter (2 kilometers) runway and the control tower are 100 percent finished while the passenger terminal building is 91 percent complete. "Next week, works for landscaping and McKinley access road will commence," Tan said, adding, "We will beat the June or July deadline this year." Sprawling in a 1,810,000-meter land area, the 8.2 billion yen or P5 billion projects was attacked by rebels on October 8, 2006. The rebels bombed two imported electronic-controlled batching plant towers and a generator set at the airport power house. The project construction started on August 4, 2004 and was expected to be finished on January 20, 2007. But due to the attack, Tan said, "It can't be denied that there were delays and so we expect the completion of the project in the 3rd quarter of this year." Funding for the project was obtained through a Philippine loan from the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC). Japanese firm Takenaka Itochu Corporation is the main contractor with Korean firm Hanjin Corporation as sub-contractor. Once completed, the Silay airport can accommodate Boeing 737 and Airbus 330 passenger planes. But basically, it is an airport for domestic flights, and in a bid to trigger business and tourism for the central Philippines area. It has also the design specifications on a par with an international airport, and which comply with international standards, Tan said. Design and supervision, on the other hand, is carried out by Pacific Consultants International (PCI) while detailed design of some of the air traffic control, lighting, meteorological and aviation fuel facilities are handled by the Takenaka-Itochu joint venture, he added. Another casino? Meanwhile, Tan denied the report that Philippine Gaming Corporation (Pagcor) is planning to build a casino beside the Silay airport. "There's no truth yet on this report," Tan said. |
