you're right,,,almost the forumers here are same with opinion. we're an anti-retention of the old airport. hope their proposals to make it that a SEZ and EPZ, and a seaport is an a good ideas to them (bacolod officials). and if successfully done its time to put of some highrise hotels and condos. a time again for the Sugarland Hotel to expand and to add a more storey and actually they had already a proposals.

pls read your PM friend...

Indeed NG, we have a lot to thank the Sovereign one. It took mother nature to make our politicians realize that. Well, He moves in mysterious ways indeed. Tani untata na na nila ang signature campaign. Waste of time and resources gid na. Instead, they better plan the public transportation requirements going to and coming from the new airport. Pano ang taxi or aircon bus service to Bacolod from Silay for the passengers and well wishers. Or from Bacolod to Silay.

Go beyond parochial thinking, says tsinoy bizmen
Sunstar Bacolod Monday, August 20, 2007
By Gil Alfredo B. Severino

BACOLOD Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Emeritus Alfredo Barcelona advised people behind the Retain Old Airport Movement to go beyond parochial thinking.

The people behind the Retain Old Airport Movement are those pushing the retention of the old airport in Singcang area in Bacolod even if the New Bacolod-Silay Airport of international standards opens soon.

"Let us look at the airports from the perspective of the province and the world, not from Bacolod standpoint alone," he said.
Barcelona proposed that the province can be subdivided into three clusters, each cluster is served by one airport.

"The southern cluster can be served by the soon-to-be Kabankalan airport. The center cluster can be served by the Bacolod airport and the northern cluster, by the Silay airport," Barcelona said.

"Using airports and seaports, we can link the southern cluster to Mindanao growth centers, the center cluster to the Western Visayas growth centers and the northern cluster to Region 7 growth centers. This way, no quarrel, no issue. But it has to be well planned," he said.

Barcelona said that the airports are just a part of the proposed mega economic body in Bacolod, in which he proposed clustering as strategy for the municipalities and cities to get their acts together.

I don't think there is a problem with moving to Silay the airport operations. Another factor why buildings in Bacolod City have limited heights is because the city proper itself is under the flight path of the aeroplanes taking-off and landing at Bacolod's Singcang airport.

If the old airport gets decommissioned, possibilities of putting up high-rises in Bacolod is endless.

MBCCI maintains stand backing airport transfer

The Metro Bacolod Chamber of Commerce and Industry maintains its stance supporting the transfer of Bacolod airport to Silay City, MBCCI president Roberto Montelibano said.

The MBCCI made its stand on the issue a long time ago but while construction of the access road at the new airport is not complete, Bacolod airport should remain open, he added.

On the call to retain the facility even after the airport in Silay becomes operational, Montelibano said Philippine Airlines owner Lucio Tan, as co-owner of the property, should be consulted first.

Not only Tan but also the original owners of the land who allowed the city government to use it for the airport facility should be consulted, he said.

He added that with Tan's various investments in Bacolod City, it is possible that the business tycoon will favorably consider the proposal of retaining the airport. Tan has been given the distinction as Bacolod City's adopted son, and was the honorary mayor of the city during the celebration of the 2006 Chinese New Year. Effort to retain the Bacolod airport snowballed after a group composed of representatives from the business group and other sectors in the city launched a signature drive favoring the move.

The convenors said they strongly feel that the Bacolod airport is a vital facility that should be preserved.

Vice Governor Isidro Zayco is also in favor for the retention, saying it can serve as an alternative airport even if the airport in Silay opens. "The more airports we have, the better for the economy of Negros Occidental," Zayco said.*NAB

'Blame it to the crosswinds'
Sunstar Bacolod, 20August2007

CROSSWINDS could have been the reason why an Air Philippines aircraft from Cebu was diverted to Sta. Barbara, Iloilo Friday morning when it failed to land here at the old Bacolod airport in Singcang area, Bacolod Vice Mayor Jude Thaddeus Sayson said.

"While this is a consideration, retaining it has a greater purpose for Bacolod," Sayson added.

Sayson stressed, "I don't find the Friday's incident as a hindrance to the move to retain the old airport."

Sayson is one who favors the retention of the old airport.

Even if the New Bacolod-Silay Airport of international standards in Bagtic, Silay opens soon.

The City Government of Bacolod is also willing to shoulder local expenses in the operations of the old airport in case it will be retained.

"Should the Singcang-airport is retained, the City's coffers will not be affected since it will remain viable, therefore sustainable," Mayor Evelio Leonardia stressed.

Crosswinds are sometimes called "X/Wind" because these are perpendicular wind forces along airport runways. There are instances when crosswinds are stronger than the aircraft limit so landing sometimes is very dangerous. (GABS)

maybe these people want another tragedy or lives lost(knock on wood) at the Bacolod Airport until they finally put the "retain Bacolod airport" thing to a halt.

blaming mother nature? you can't stop a bad weather from happening! but you can know it's happening and make necessary precautions to protect yourself! if this "retain the old airport" will succeed, we will have a situation where the resources of the of the city and province will be spread thin- both human and financial resources.

we will have a situation where both airports, uncomfortably close to each other (only 24 kms apart, very much within the 50 km for putting the nearest airport as required by law) chasing what? exactly the same air passenger market! so much for the cost of manitaining two airports with unnecessarily redundant/duplicating functions when more efficiency could be achieved by operating just one airport that was by the way built to accomodate present and projected increases in air passenger market of the city and province.

to a certain point, mr. zayco is right when he pointed out when he said that "the more airports we have, the better it is for the economy of negros occidental". but we really have to define this "more" to a certain point where the economies of scale and maintenance costs of operating "these many airports" are offset by demand, for these airports to operate profitably! that's why an airport in kabankalan is in the offing because more airports are needed by the "whole province".

besides, last friday's event demostrated to us all the compromised safety of the continued operation of this airport. add to that, that other near accident years ago due to alleged miscalculation because many city skylines are within the direct path of these aircrafts using the old airport. these leaders should have heeded the "gentle" reminder of mother nature for that near runway mishap! instead, they are blaming the "crosswinds" of mother nature! migo gonzharr, your concern for air passenger safety is as great as mine!

Monico offers to bring appeal on airport retention to Arroyo

Bacolod Rep. Monico Puentevella yesterday said he is offering to bring the position paper of the Retain Bacolod Airport Movement, who are seeking the retention of the Bacolod airport, to the President.

If they are not against the Silay airport, there is no issue here, Puentevella said. But he said he believes only business tycoon Lucio Tan, who owns 20 hectares of the 37-hectare property, and President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo can decide on the matter.

He said the national government is determined to open the Silay airport once the construction of the McKinley access road is completed early next year. He said he also met with the people at Philippine Air Lines about their plans.

He also said he believes Negros Occidental Gov. Joseph Marañon should be consulted about his opinion on the retention of the Bacolod airport.

Meanwhile, Puentevella said he recently introduced a bill declaring all forms of smuggling as economic sabotage. The bill provides that any individual or groups found guilty of actual or technical smuggling shall suffer the penalty of life imprisonment and a fine not less than P500,000 depending on the quantity of smuggled goods.

Puentevella said he hopes that the law will serve as a deterrent to all those engaged in smuggling activities. He said he was informed there is smuggling in the sugar industry and an investigation should be conducted.*CGS

Yes, you are right, they really need to concentrate on the taxi service and shuttle buses to the new airport. But i think they should do it kagaya yung sa centennial airport, na merong ticket na kukunin ang pasahero sa dispatcher so as to avoid overpricing. kasi there's a fix rate kung saan ang destination mo. the driver will get the ticket from you and redeem it later. Para makalikaw sa mga bentahoso.

There's no harm retaining Bacolod airport, guv says

Negros Occidental Gov. Joseph Marañon yesterday said there is no harm in continuing the use of the Bacolod airport even when the new one in Silay City begins to operate.

Continuing the Bacolod airport will be a boost to the economy since it will enhance the employment and development of the city, the governor said.

He also said if he is asked, he will get involved in the discussions on the Bacolod airport retention proposal.

In fact, Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia has plans for the Bacolod airport should its operations be allowed to continue, he said.

In some places in the United States there are more than one airport operating in an area, he said.

The person who can decide on its retention aside from President Gloria Arroyo is Lucio Tan since Philippines Airlines owns about half of the Bacolod airport area, he said.

The airport in Silay can be used as a regional hub for flights from nearby countries, he said.

We should have an open mind on the proposal to retain the Bacolod airport and discuss what is best for everybody, he said.

It is sad that Bacolod that is highly urbanized is losing an airport when the bulk of passengers, I am told, come from the south, he said.

However, he said the decision to transfer the airport to Silay was made by previous leaders and is now water under the bridge.*CPG

* * *

Meanwhile, Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry-Bacolod Chapter president James Chua yesterday said he will solicit the opinion of their members on the initiative to retain the Bacolod Airport.

Chua said he needs a better reason than putting up a flying school to convince him that retaining the facility is a good idea now.

He said logic tells him that limited resources should be invested in more productive endeavors than spending it for what he called "whimsical purposes" such as a flying school.

"While the airport was there, why did nobody think of using it as a flying school? Do we really need it or do we simply want to retain the facility," he asked.

If it is for tourism purposes, Chua said the new airport in Silay is not that far from Bacolod City. He said he is more supportive of the plan to open an airport in Kabankalan and Sipalay cities.

Earlier, representatives from different sectors in Bacolod City launched an initiative to retain the Bacolod Airport. Convenors of the Retain Bacolod Airport Movement said the facility is vital for the economy and tourism of the province.

The group said they will submit a position paper to President Gloria Macapagal to appeal her decision of disposing of the airport once the facility in Silay becomes operational.

those from that Retain Bacolod Airport Movement are not thinking... how would ICAO gave its certification for international flights to the Bacolod-Silay Airport when there is another airport within 50 km of it?
