Good luck. The problem is, as stated before, it is NOT an international airport but an airport of international standards.

Providing a port of entry into the country is not an easy thing, especially with the security requirements these days. They'll have to hire customs officers, have quarantine facilities, and significant police support. I doubt there is demand for international flights -- there's only a handful of domestic flights as it is.

take note Kalibo Aklan has an international flight from South Korea, using MD 80's of asian spirit, 3x week I think Bacolod has no problem to host the international flight Bacolod airport is far more advance than Aklan airport.

Correction actually its MD-82, Kalibo airport cannot accomodate MD-11 because it is a widebody aircraft used for intercontinental flights.

No alternate road to airport yet,
traffic problems feared in Silay
GLORIA EXPECTED AT INAUGURATION
BY CARLA GOMEZ
The new airport of international standards in Barangay Bagtic, Silay City, Negros Occidental, is expected to be inaugurated next month and to operate sometime in October, but an alternative access road has yet to be built raising fear of traffic bottlenecks along McKinley road that passes through two cemeteries.

Gov. Joseph Marañon yesterday said President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo may attend the inauguration of the new airport of international standards next month.

"No date has been set but we are hoping and expecting that the President will come to inaugurate the Silay airport," he said.

Eduardo Mangalili, project director of the Selected Airports Development Project of the Department of Transportation and Communication, said the about P4.3 billion airport with a 2,000 meter runway is expected to be completed by the middle of July.

After completion, flight tests will conducted for about two months before the airport becomes fully operational, to comply with requirements of the International Civil Aviation Organization based in Canada and the Philippines' Air Transportation Office, he said.

The airport is of international standards but will cater to domestic needs, he said. Mangalili said work on the expansion and improvement of the 4.7 kilometers McKinley road from Silay proper to the new airport has started.

However, work on the Guinhalaran access road cannot be started yet. Funding for the alternate road needs the approval of the National Economic and Development Authority after which it will be subject to approval by the Japan Bank for International Cooperation, Mangalili said.

Marañon said he will push for the construction of the alternative road to the new airport through Guinhalaran because traffic along McKinley road will be congested, especially when there are funerals.

He said the provincial government allocated a P2 million counterpart to Silay City funds to acquire the right of way for the Guinhalaran road.

Mayor Carlo Gamban said the Silay City government put up a counterpart fund of a little more than P2 million for the alternative road and has acquired the bulk of what is needed already.

It is just a matter of one or two more landowners signing, he said.

Incoming Mayor Silay Mayor Jose Montelibano said he will look into the airport road concern.*CPG [url]www.visayan daily star.com

Iloilo airports inauguration tentatively set on June 13
By Erwin Ambo S. Delilan

IF THERE will be no more hitches, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will finally lead the blessing and inauguration of two international airports in Western Visayas - the Cabatuan Airport in Iloilo and Silay Airport in Negros, on June 13.

This was announced Tuesday by National capital Region head Ricardo Cano Tan.

Pinoy Votes: Sun.Star Election 2007 Coverage

Tan, in a phone interview with Sun.Star-Bacolod, said DOTC Secretary Leandro Mendoza had already informed him about the blessing and inauguration of the airports in Iloilo and Negros.

"But the June 13 schedule is still tentative depending on the situation which may arise on before this date," Tan said.

The President was scheduled to inaugurate the two airports on April 19. However, it was aborted after Firs Gentleman Mike Arroyo was hospitalized due to aortic aneurysm.

Since the First Gentleman is now in good condition, although, he's still undergoing recovery; the President is now hassle-free to perform her duties as the Chief Executive of the country.

Tan said Silay airport is now almost 100 percent complete while the Cabatuan airport is now ready for commercial flights.

"As far as I know, contractors of Silay airport are now doubling their efforts on the pavement of two access roads going to the Silay airport- the McKinley and Guinhalaran access roads," Tan said.

As soon as these two access roads are completed, the Silay airport located at Bagtic, will become operational, he added.

Latest update on the Silay airport revealed the 2000-meter (2 kilometers) runway and the control tower are 100 percent finished.

The passenger terminal building is also more than 90 percent complete. However, this 8.2 billion yen or P5 billion project was attacked by the New People's Army (NPA) on October 8, 2006.

The rebels bombed two imported electronic-controlled batching plant towers and a generator set at the airport power house.

Damage pegged at more than P20 million. The project construction started on August 4, 2004 and was expected to be finished on January 20, 2007.

But due to the attack, Tan said, "It can't be denied there were delays and so we expect the completion of the project in the 3rd quarter of this year."

Sprawling in a 1,810,000-meter land area, the Silay airport project was funded through a Philippine loan from the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC).

Japanese firm Takenaka Itochu Corporation is the main contractor with Korean firm Hanjin Corporation as sub-contractor.

Once completed, the Silay airport can accommodate Boeing 737 and Airbus 330 passenger planes.

Basically, however, this is an airport for domestic flights, and in a bid to trigger business and tourism for the central Philippines area.

But it has also the design specifications on a par with an international airport, and which comply with international standards.

Pacific Consultants International (PCI) carried out design and supervision while detailed design of some of the air traffic control, lighting, meteorological and aviation fuel facilities are handled by the Takenaka-Itochu joint venture, he added.

Sugarfreak dont worry bacolod airport have more time to prepare the opening this coming October, in fact the inauguration will be next month but they will not open until october for masskara. this is more on political issues. hopefully by October all political nuisance will slow down. In fact the travel agency already fully booked for flights going to bacolod,. Bacolod is preparing for chartered flight coming from Hongkong, China, Japan and Korea. the problem in bacolod is a shortage of hotel room. and they need a big time investor to put up big hotels here.

that's because hotels in bacolod are owned by local businessmen,... one thing I noticed about the city, is negrenses prefer to do it,... on their own. Instead of franchising, build your own product and all that...
