SAD NEWS:
WINNIPEG — Louis Mathez, who ran the Wagon Wheel restaurant on Hargrave Street for more than 50 years, died Sunday at the Health Sciences Centre. He was 75. Mathez started cooking at the Wagon Wheel when he was 22, working for his dad William and uncle Louis Chatelain, who both bought the lunch-counter restaurant a short time earlier. In time his signature meal became the clubhouse sandwich, stuffed with real turkey cooked earlier in the day. "Fresh turkey has almost become a thing of the past," he said in a 2003 interview. "Most places serve the processed stuff and people order it, even though they know it's not very good." Mathez's routine didn't vary much over the years: Open the door at 5:30 a.m. Turn on the lights. Fire up the old grey Garland gas stove. And cook four big turkeys. His day ended at 6 p.m. when he closed up. Mathez battled cancer in 2007 and returned to the kitchen when he was healthy enough. His wife Marina of 35 years died of cancer in 1994. She was 59. They had two children, Jill and Gary. A private family service for Mathez has been held. A longer obituary notice will be in Saturday's Free Press. |

CBC Winnipeg @17:40 today had a small news story giving details of the latest news for the whole Centrepoint project.
The office/hotel tower will start to get off the ground starting in February (I just walked by today and the site looks untouched now since the last photo I posted here. I really don't know what the hold up is) and the two restaurant tenants are hoping to move in to their new digs by fall 2014. There will be a display suite available for public viewing for the Glasshouse Skylofts some time this March The whole 100 million Office/Hotel/Parkade/Condo project hope to be completed by late 2015. As soon as there is some action at the site I'll be sure to post some pictures. Thanks to all who keep tuning in...........

l see what you mean by no one actually building it. To me l think that they lost the contract to build it. If this is the case. It will take about probably 4 to 6 mths to get another contracter in to get things moving.

It's official -- Milestones Grill and Bar will be the anchor restaurant tenant in the 311 Portage Avenue at Centrepoint development.
Michelle Constant, vice-president of retail leasing with the Winnipeg office of Cushman & Wakefield, has confirmed an earlier Free Press report that said the Ontario-based Milestones chain and a new restaurant concept by local Pizzeria Gusto owner Bobby Mottola were expected to be the main-floor tenants in the highrise office/retail/hotel tower under construction at the corner of Portage and Donald Street. Constant, who is the leasing agent for the retail space in the $75-million Longboat Development Corp./Artis Real Estate Investment Trust development, said the Milestones casual fine dining outlet will be more than 9,000 square feet in size, and will face onto Portage. "For a restaurant, that's very big. That's bigger than an Earl's or a Moxie's," she said. "This will be their flagship store in Winnipeg." Constant said there were "multiple offers" for the space. "They were all strong players. We also had people from Calgary and Edmonton." Two reasons they opted for Milestones were that it was willing to take all 9,000-plus square feet of Portage Avenue space, and it was new to Winnipeg. "For us, it was important to look for a concept that wasn't anywhere else in the city, because it then becomes a destination for all of Winnipeg." Constant also noted the Milestones chain is owned by Cara Operations, which also owns the Harvey's, Montana's and Kelsey's restaurant chains. "So they're an organization that is very familiar with the Winnipeg market, which for us, was good." Constant said Mottola's new 3,900-square-foot restaurant is an Asian/Latin-fusion concept and will face onto Donald Street. It will also be a first for the city, she added. She said both restaurants are expected to open at the same time as the tower. Longboat president Scott Stephanson said that should be in September 2014. Stephanson said the foundation for the tower, which will include a 14-storey Alt Hotel built on top of a five-storey office/retail complex, has been completed. The precast walls should start going up within the next couple of weeks, he added. (By: Murray McNeill http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/opi...185859642.html) |
