WELLS, England
WELLS, England ![]() Country: England County: Somerset Population - City: 10,406 On Thursday, I ventured into the depths of Somerset to the delightful city of Wells. Wells is a cathedral city and civil parish in the Mendip district of Somerset, England, on the southern edge of the Mendip Hills. Although the population recorded in the 2001 census is 10,406, it has had city status since 1205. It is the second smallest English city in terms of area and population after the City of London although, unlike the latter, Wells is not part of a larger metropolitan conurbation, and is consequently described in some sources as being England's smallest city.. The name Wells derives from the three wells dedicated to Saint Andrew, one in the market place and two within the grounds of the Bishop's Palace and cathedral. There was a small Roman settlement around the wells, but its importance grew under the Saxons when King Ine of Wessex founded a minster church in 704, around which the settlement grew. Wells became a trading centre and involved in cloth making before its involvement in both the English Civil War and the Monmouth Rebellion during the 17th century. In the 19th century, transport infrastructure improved with stations on three different railway lines. See what you make of it.

This first area is around Priest Row and St. Cuthbert's Street. The name of the latter is associated with the shown church, a lovely little place with a surprisingly bright interior. The end of St. Cuthbert's Street becomes the High Street which will be shown in the next update.

St. Cuthbert’s Street becomes the High Street at a busy junction. Unfortunately the High Street isn’t pedestrianised so I was faced with the familiar problem of vehicles ruining the otherwise picturesque look of the town. Nevertheless, at the top of end of the High Street, one emerges into Market Square, overlooked by the Cathedral to one corner, the arched entrance to the Bishop’s Palace in the middle, and the City Hall on the other side. One also finds the National Trust office here alongside quaint little shops and traditional pubs, inside one of which I had lunch. Enjoy!

Here is a brief update to help get to the next page, showing the Bishop's Palace.
It is adjacent to Wells Cathedral and has been the home of the Bishops of the Diocese of Bath and Wells for 800 years. Part of the buildings are still used as a residence by the current bishop, however much of the palace is now used for public functions. The palace was used as a location for some of the scenes in the 2007 film Hot Fuzz. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
